Obituary

Luz M. Escamilla (nee Medina) was born to eternal life on Friday June 20 at the age of 86. Her beloved husband of 61 years, Paul (Policarpo) S Escamilla preceded her in death in Sept 2011. Maria de la Luz Medina was born and raised in Del Rio, Texas. Luz and Paul made their home in San Antonio, moving here shortly after their wedding in 1950. She was employed at Logistics Command, Kelly Air Force Base for 42 years. She believed strongly in education and worked for every school her children attended. Luz was very active in the community, volunteering on political campaigns, nonprofit causes and cultural events. She and Paul were tireless workers at NIOSA for more than a decade, chairing the tamale booth into her mid-70s. She was instrumental in developing major fundraisers in support of the Literacy Council and the San Fernando Cathedral renovation project. Luz started the Mexican American Business and Professional Women's Club, served on the Citizens Appraisal Review Board, and was a member emeritus of the National Veterans Outreach Program. She was twice named San Antonio Woman of the Year, along with representing the city during the United Nations International Year of the Woman conference in Mexico City. She is survived by her children: Frances Tessa Bartels (Richard) of Milwaukee, WI, Michael of Memphis, TN and Paul Andrew (Cynthia Sanchez) of San Antonio TX; grandchildren, Alyssia, Paul Steven and Bianca Escamilla; sister Clemencia (Perchy) Flores of Del Rio TX, brother Felix Medina, and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will begin on Wednesday evening, June 25, at 5:00 PM with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM at the Angelus Chapel. Funeral Mass will be offered on Thursday, June 26 at 9:00 AM at San Fernando Cathedral. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to St Francis Nursing Home, the San Antonio Conservation Society or the educational institution of your choice.
