Obituary

Lucy Martinez

February 23, 1932-June 26, 2026

Lucy Martinez, 94, of San Antonio, Texas, was peacefully called home by our Lord on June 26, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Lucy was born on February 23, 1932, to Herman and Fortunata Espinosa. She shared 66 wonderful years of marriage with her beloved husband, Presciliano "Ko" Martinez, whose steadfast love and devotion were a constant throughout her life.

Lucy began her working life remodeling homes alongside her father before accepting a position with A.S. Maresha Title Company, where her work helped provide her parents the opportunity to purchase their beloved home on Topeka Boulevard. She later attended San Antonio College, where she earned her library certification.

Her passion for education led her to Kindred Elementary, where she first served as a bilingual pre-kindergarten assistant before becoming the school's librarian, a role she held for many years. She later served as Administrative Assistant to the late Principal Albert Casillas. Even after retirement, Lucy continued to serve others by volunteering in the office at St. Cecilia Catholic School and helping organize gatherings for retired Kindred Elementary teachers.

Lucy and Ko were inseparable. Together they modeled a beautiful Catholic marriage rooted in unwavering faith, love, and selfless devotion. She was a longtime parishioner of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and, in her later years, attended St. Cecilia Catholic Parish.

Lucy found joy in knitting, ceramics, gardening, cooking, traveling, and spending time with family. Her gardens flourished with beautiful plumerias, orchids, and amaryllis. She loved opening her home each year for Posadas and Día de los Muertos celebrations centered around the Holy Rosary. Sundays were especially meaningful, as she delighted in preparing meals that brought her family together around the table. She was also an enthusiastic fan of her beloved San Antonio Spurs.

One of Lucy's greatest expressions of love was caring for others. She lovingly moved in with her parents to care for them in their final years, offering them the same compassion and dedication she showed throughout her life. A devout Catholic, she had a profound devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and to Jesus Christ. She faithfully attended Mass every Sunday with her family, as well as every Holy Day of Obligation.

Lucy will be remembered for her quiet strength, unwavering faith, generous heart, and the way she made everyone who entered her home feel like family. Like the gardens she lovingly tended, she nurtured those around her with patience, faith, and unconditional love. Her legacy will continue to bloom in the lives of everyone blessed to know and love her.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to her compassionate neighbors; her devoted caregivers, JoAnn Siller and Janie Medina; her cherished Kindred colleagues; Trinity Hospice; Devoted Home Health Care and Hospice; her five children; and especially her beloved husband, Ko, who never left her side.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Fortunata Espinosa; her sister, Sr. Dolores Espinosa; and her brother, Jimmy Espinosa.

Lucy is lovingly survived by her husband, Ko; her sisters, Carmen Sandoval and Socorro Cantu; her sister-in-law, Vickie Espinosa; and her children, Robert A. Martinez (Dr. Annette R. Rodriguez), Margaret Martinez Soza (Jim Soza), Mary Elizabeth Garcia (Salvador Garcia), Michael J. Martinez (Luli Martinez), and Christopher D. Martinez (Alice Martinez). She also leaves behind five cherished grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews who will forever treasure her memory.

The Martinez family is deeply grateful for the love, prayers, and support shown during this time as they celebrate Lucy's remarkable life.
