Lucille Garza Castaño, or Lucy as she was affectionately known throughout her life, passed away peacefully on May 8th at the age of 88.
Born on January 7, 1937, Lucy was the oldest of nine siblings. She attended Lanier High School and began working as an EKG technician, and thereafter became an LVN at the Baptist Hospital in San Antonio and private doctors' offices. As a young adult, she loved dancing, going to church, and enjoying life with friends and family. She met and married the love of her life, Manuel F. Castaño Jr., at a Valentine's Day dance when she was 21 years old. Together, they had five wonderful children. Throughout their marriage, they touched the lives of so many people around them, helping counsel and solve problems, and many times opening their home to loved ones who needed a place to live. They also led Marriage Encounter within their church and beyond, and taught other couples how to deepen their relationships with each other and Jesus Christ, and use their marriages to serve the Lord.
Lucy lived a full and happy life with God always at the center. She loved being a dedicated wife and mother, traveling, family outings, and caring for her husband throughout his life. She enjoyed making others feel happy and loved, and always made everyone laugh. She was a very caring and kind individual who always stood up for what was right. She engaged in countless activities such as volunteering at church and school, entertaining, hosting backyard barbecues and pool parties, gardening, playing cards and bunco, etc. She saved many lives throughout her life, both physically and spiritually. She loved and cared very deeply for God and could be heard singing popular love songs in the kitchen, telling those who heard her, "This is my song dedicated to God." Though she is gone, she will never be forgotten. She lived a life that made her family and those who knew her grateful to be a part of it. She was and will always be loved profoundly by family, comadres y compadres.
Lucy was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel F. Castaño Jr., mother, Eliza Craven, father, Jose Garza, brothers Joe Garza and Rogelio Garza, sisters Terry Hernandez, Olga Garza, Connie Martinez, and Josie Lara. She is survived by her five children, Manuel F. Castaño III, Carolyn C. Salcido (husband David), Christina Ramirez (husband Gonzalo), Melinda Castaño, and Mario Castaño (wife Cindy), and grandchildren Brian Castaño, Valerie Salcido, Lauren Salcido, Kevin Castaño, Mariah Castaño Aulds (husband Caleb and son Cruz), Ian Ybañez, and Elise Ybañez Calderon (husband Jaime), and siblings Eliza Treviño and Roberto Garza.
Lucy leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and family. Her spirit will live in our hearts forever. Let us all celebrate and honor her life together.
