LESLIE DAVIS CHANDLER, 75, passed away on July 4, 2021 in San Antonio, Texas. Leslie was born in Houston on May 5, 1946 to her parents Lamar W. Davis, Jr. and Peggy Kerr Davis. In 1965, she graduated from Houston's Lamar High School and went on to Texas Tech where she pledged the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority.
After her freshman year, she transferred to UT-Austin where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1970. Leslie began her teaching career with the Fort Bend ISD in Missouri City, Texas. On December 20, 1975 Leslie married Stuart Chandler, and continued teaching school until 1978 when she resigned to start a family. On January 7, 1979, a daughter, Erin Elizabeth Chandler, was born. Stuart's career transferred the family to Lubbock in 1982, and to San Antonio in 1988. Leslie returned to teaching in 1995 for the North East ISD at Lee High School and Roosevelt High School until 2004. During those years she taught History, Government, Economics, and Geography. She had a passion for History and loved teaching it to her students because there was so much that could be learned from it. In her personal time, books and programs about ancient Egypt and the Middle Ages were always subjects of interest to her.
As a child, she was sort of a tomboy who didn't mind getting dirty. As an adult, she would rather spend time browsing in a hardware store or gun shop, than in dress stores in a mall.
Leslie had a dry wit and a great sense of humor that brought smiles and laughter to almost any situation. She was an excellent cook, especially Cajun dishes and anything that required using her iron skillets. Leslie learned how to sew while still in school, and made beautiful dresses with plenty of ribbons or lace stitched together for her daughter Erin. In later years, when her health limited her activities, she enjoyed watching British mysteries on PBS and old movies on the Turner Classic Movie Channel.
She was a patriot with great respect for our form of government, the Constitution and the rights and freedoms it protects. It is fitting that her last day in this world was July 4 th , a day we honor and celebrate those liberties, a day of historical significance.
Leslie is survived by her husband Stuart, their daughter Erin Adams of Austin and her husband Chip Adams, and granddaughter Madeline Adams; also, cousins Mary Louise Denney of Houston and her family, Robert Berryman of Georgetown and his family, and Dr. Stacey Kerr of Santa Rosa, CA and her family.
There will be a short service of remembrance for Leslie on the grounds of Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at 9:45am. Those wishing to make a gift honoring Leslie are asked to send it to Christian Assistance Ministry (CAM) at 110 McCullough Ave., San Antonio, Texas 78215, website: christianassistanceministry.org or your favorite charity.
