Obituary

Larry E. Grothues, 69, of San Antonio, Texas passed away on April 12, 2018.

Larry was born in San Antonio on September 19, 1948 to Maurice (deceased) and Elsie Grothues. Larry is survived by his spouse and soulmate Louann McDaniel Grothues; his children, Denice Notzon (Mark), Erin Grothues-Harrison (Matt), Brianne Grothues, Christi Hines (Thomas), Casey Rogers (Brandi); his ten grandchildren; his mother, Elsie Grothues; his brothers, Tommy Grothues (Judy), Alan Grothues (Debbie), and David Grothues (Jolyn); many nieces and nephews, his beloved employees at MG Building Materials and numerous canine companions.

Larry proudly grew up on the South Side of San Antonio in a large, loving Belgian family. He graduated from Central Catholic High School, class of '65, where he had perfect attendance for the first three years. Larry was a member of the Stamp Club, the Dance Committee and a cafeteria worker at Central Catholic. Later on in life, Larry and MG Building Materials continually supported Central Catholic with materials for the baseball field, sponsorship of the golf tournament for over 20 years and various other functions. He graduated from St. Mary's University, class of '70, member of Tau Delta Epsilon, with a degree in Business. He also served his country in the U.S. Air Force.

In 1974, Larry and his father started MG Building Materials on New Laredo Highway. Through their hard work, sweat and tenacious efforts, Larry, his father and three brothers turned MG Building Materials into a powerhouse business, serving South Texas with 6 locations. MG is recognized as one of the largest privately owned lumber businesses in South Texas. Over the years, the lumber business has evolved into millwork, a truss plant, a treating plant, insulation, roofing and a retail yard to serve the subcontractor community. MG Financial was also formed to assist homebuyers with mortgages and lend money to the builder community; a true vertical integration of the business. Larry spearheaded with partners in developing multifamily projects, residential land developments and large office developments. He had an uncanny ability to recall details of conversations and the numbers of any deal, in detail, years later. Larry was larger than life, a true icon in the San Antonio business community.

Above all else, Larry loved his family and enjoyed sharing his hobbies with them. He was a true outdoorsman that traveled the world on hunting and fishing expeditions with his brothers and friends and spent numerous days at his ranches in Laredo and Vanderpool (both of which he proudly nurtured into wildlife refuges). Larry and Louann enjoyed hosting family and friends at their mountain retreat in Crested Butte, Colorado. Larry also had a passion for collecting muscle cars and sports cars, keeping a rotating stock of vehicles at his home. He enjoyed traveling to car auctions around the country, exploring the vast selection of automobiles and visiting with fellow car lovers. Larry was always on the lookout for something fresh and new. His weekends were filled with family, trips to the ranches, fishing at the Texas coast or driving his truck around to look at land deals - always accompanied by his beloved dogs.

To say Larry lived each day of his extraordinary life to the fullest would be selling him short. He loved starting the morning off at 5 a.m., heading to work and finding the deal of the day. He enjoyed working with his customers and friends, often eating lunch each day with a different person, scheming up his next adventure or business deal. He conducted business even in his last days from the hospital. Larry never met a stranger. His list of friends would fill a telephone book. He could converse on any subject and to tell his life's story would require a legal team to keep his friends out of trouble.

When Larry was born, he broke a special mold. He was a one-of-a-kind extraordinary man loved by those whose lives he touched and the vast group of people whom he selflessly helped over the years. Larry will be remembered as a great friend and mentor, never seeking recognition for his contributions and support of those in need. His loss will be mourned for a long time. Adiós good friend.
