JUAN MANUEL MAYA PATIÑO, "Papá Manuel"
1943- 2023
Juan Manuel Maya Patiño, Manuel to all of us, was born in Mexico City on June 24, 1943. It was a day when the Feasts of Corpus Christi and St. John coincided; hence the name Juan Manuel he was so proud of. He reminded us that his "once in a very long while birthdate" made him special, and he was. Manuel died a few months after turning 80 in San Antonio, Texas Saturday, August 19, 2023, sparring with every punch of Parkinson's Disease and then cancer, always refusing to retire. Manuel was married to Teresa Sotomayor de Maya, "Tere Maya, mama," for 56 years – in case anyone doubts a life-long commitment is possible. Seven children mourn Papa Manuel, three of his own and four nieces and nephews he loved the same: Tere, Monica, Juan, Gaby, Arturo, Faby and Paola. The jewels of his life will always be his granddaughters: Alessandra, "Princesa," as his phone would remind us every time she called; and Sofia, who delighted him with every milestone she reached. He is also survived by his loving wife, Tere, with whom he fought every morning, reconciled every evening, and shared an incredible life. He was preceded into God's embrace by his loving mother, Abuela Tina, his father and family, Tio Arturo, and Abuela Lupe, his mother-in-law and adopted mother, who once said, "Manuel is the best son I had."
Manuel loved trains, real trains, freight trains, model trains, toy trains, and lived life like a train ride… taking it in slowly, stopping everywhere for good food and company and ensuring everyone was welcome on the train with him. His struggle with disease was the same, a long train ride he often resisted but never got off until the right stop came. A self-made engineer from Politécnico,"del Poly" in Mexico City, and a gifted salesman, Manuel made his career selling lab/medical equipment. He often said it was a good business because people get sick even in the worst economy! Of course, he continued to work until a few days before his death; having been a true sales pirate, he could sell anything to anyone. He won "best salesman" for every company he worked for and accrued lasting friendships from every corner of the Americas.
Manuel loved his Church community, his ACTS brothers, the couples from Lovestrong, being a Communion minister and even the Divine Mercy chaplets, where he took some embarrassing naps. The archdiocese recognized him and Tere for supporting religious vocations with the Lumen Gentium award, an accolade he boasted about because he said the archbishop didn't know all the trouble he had been in! He was a Mexican in love with the United States – all of it, from Mickey Mouse, to the corporations he worked for, all the way to the Constitution. Manuel became a US citizen and died in the country he respected, his by choice.
When his daughter, Tere, entered the Sisters of Charity of the Incarante Word, he overcame his initial resistance by adopting every Incarnate Word sister. He barbequed for them, welcomed them to his home, picked them up at the airport, took them shopping, joked around and conspired with them. He knew he had a bigger family than he ever imagined.
We will remember the twinkle he had when he was up to mischief, the scones he ate with singular delight, his refusal to ever have a dog, and his gentle, tender heart that teared him up with every sad movie and every moving goodbye. Sadly, he died before his dear Dallas Cowboys won another Superbowl, one of his dreams; they might be luckier in eternity! Always a friend to his friends, he will live on in many hearts.
