Obituary

Josephine "JoJo" Perales, 89, of San Antonio, Texas, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

JoJo was born on October 8, 1935, to parents Raul Emilio Guerra and Josefina Garza Guerra in Corpus Christi, Texas. Alongside her beloved sister, Charlotte Garcia (Larry), she was raised in Corpus Christi in a loving home that shaped the kind and caring woman she became.  JoJo, also named Mimo by her grandkids, graduated from WB Ray High School in Corpus Christi. She attended Del Mar College where she met the love of her life, Nick Perales. They married on September 22, 1956, at Corpus Christi Cathedral.

From Del Mar College, JoJo then attended and graduated from Incarnate Word College (now known as UIW) in San Antonio, Texas with a Bachelor of Science in Education. While she was amid her teaching career and raising her family, JoJo attended the University of Texas in Austin where she graduated with a Masters in Curriculum & Instruction. JoJo's career in education spanned 30 years, all with the San Antonio Independent School District where she taught elementary education as well as being a Reading Specialist in their Diagnostic Center.

Education was not just JoJo's profession, but it was also her purpose in life, teaching about God's love & the power of prayer while babysitting her grandchildren as well as through her service as a spiritual companion for numerous ACTS, ACTS Missions, and Women in Recovery Retreats, in the Altar Society, as an RCIA sponsor, as a coordinator for weddings, funerals, and quinceaneras, as a Eucharistic Minister and Mass greeter…and wherever else help was needed at Blessed Sacrament Church where she and her husband were parishioners for 51 years. For the last 26 of those years, JoJo and Nick picked up and delivered the hosts for the mass services for the Blessed Sacrament Church community.

Besides serving her family and her church very well, JoJo was a big sports fan. The San Antonio Spurs, the Houston Astros, and the Dallas Cowboys were her favorites, but she still preferred to wait until the 4th quarter or last 3 innings of a game to really get into it. However, when her grandkids were playing in their sporting events, she was all in from the start, never missing a moment!

JoJo enjoyed and excelled in archery class in high school. Her other hobbies included knitting, crocheting, embroidering, and playing the piano. She also had a green thumb with a particular knack for nurturing wounded plants to renewed life. But one of her favorite things to do at every stage of her life was to dance, especially when the cumbias, polkas and sambas came on. For the last three years of her life, JoJo was blind and in a wheelchair. What joy to know she can see the splendor of Heaven's beauty while also dancing again!

In addition to her parents, JoJo was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Nick; daughter, Jeanette Marie Gramling; and grandson, Jerry Britt III. Those left to cherish her legacy are numerous loving family members & friends.
