Obituary

Joseph Henry Pulliam died peacefully in his home Saturday evening, April 27, 2024, after a long, hard battle with cancer. Joseph Henry Pulliam was born at home in Alamo Heights to Henry F. Pulliam, a postal worker, and Margaret P. Pulliam, a teacher, on March 22, 1946. Joe was the second of four children.  He spent his childhood years in Alamo Heights, Texas, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Encinitas, California.

After graduating from high school Joe financed his further education at the University of California at Davis through scholarships and hard work. He was a founding member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture Business Management and was commissioned in the US Army Quartermaster Corps upon graduation in June of 1967. After training at Fort Lee, Virginia, his first assignment was in Mannheim Germany where he met Helga Jaekel, a German national who worked for the US Army. They quickly became an item and married in October of 1968. They raised three beautiful children, Stephen, Robert and Marilyn, during his military career.

Joe's military awards include the Legion of Merit, several Army commendations plus a wall full of other awards. Joe retired at Fort Lee in July 1994 as a Lt. Colonel where his military career had begun 27 years before.

Joe brought his family to San Antonio and worked several jobs including a credit manager for San Antonio Brake and Clutch and Maintenance for St. John Neumann Catholic Church where he was a member for over 25 years and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus for council 9291.

He is survived by his wife, Helga Jaekel Pulliam. His sons: Stephen and Robert Pulliam and his daughter, Marilyn Pulliam-Coshal and her husband, Mark Coshal; his eleven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and his three siblings,  Doris Ann, Thomas and Linda and several nieces and nephews.

We would like to send a special thank you out to the following people: his two doctors, Dr. Charles Jacocks and Alexandra Brennan  at SAMC who never gave up; Embrace hospice team especially Nurse Cindy, Lucy (our daughter-in-law always) and our neighbors/friends that always checked in.
