Joseph Lionel Hernandez, 59 years young went to his Heavenly home Thursday, May 30, 2019 after a short and unexpected illness. He lived life to the fullest with an energetic spirit, a strong faith, a wonderful sense of humor and a steadfast love for his daughter Emily, wife Mari, and his family.
The youngest son of Nazario (Deceased) and Georgia Hernandez, both from Victoria, Texas, Joseph (known to many as "Joey") attended St. Benedicts Catholic School, Class of 1974. He graduated from Douglas MacArthur High School, Class of 1978, and graduated with a degree in Accounting from the University of Texas, San Antonio, Class of 1983.
Joey was a successful small business owner, establishing and directing, Green Pros, a Landscape and Irrigation company that provided residential and commercial lawn and irrigation services throughout San Antonio and surrounding communities.
His love for recreational and sport fishing, inspired him and 6 fishing buddies, to launch the SurfCats Fishing Classic tournament, held annually for 27 years at Padre Island until 2011. The SurfCats Fishing Classic attracted fishing enthusiasts from all over Texas.
Joey was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, where he served our Lord indoors (assisting in reading the Word of Our Lord during services) and outdoors (a key organizer and participant in the Church's annual festival). He and his sisters and friends anchored a well-visited fund-raising burger booth, cooking hundreds of deliciously popular burgers that always sold out to the benefit of the Church's fund-raising goals.
Joey is survived by his precious daughter, Emily Anne Hernandez and wife, Maria Amparo Hernandez. He will be sorely missed by his mom, 3 brothers and 5 sisters and their families, the mother of his daughter, and all who had the special privilege of being his friend.
