José S. Martinez passed peacefully from this earth to be with God in his eternal home on Saturday February 19 th , 2022. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Rosita Martinez, parents Porfirio Martinez, Maria Martinez, son Gabriel Martinez, brother Rudy Martinez and sister Mercedes Garza.
He is survived by his wife Guadalupe Vargas, sons Daniel (Angela), Oscar (Christina) and David Martinez, step-sons Dr. Eduardo Vargas (Dr. Viridiana Benitez), Felipe Vargas (Alicia Torres Don) and step-daughter Dr. Leticia Vargas (Essa Musallan). José attended Lanier High School until he left school early to help with family expenses by doing agricultural share cropping labor. At the young age of 17 he began his successful career as a truck driver. In 1966 he was hired by Wilson Bruton and Willie Vogel at Valliant Vegetable Co. as a shipping manager. All of his hard work and dedication paid off when he was later promoted to partner/owner of Valliant Trucking Co. until he retired from the company.
He had a passion for traveling by land, air and sea. He traveled most of the U.S. from coast to coast. He even ventured as far as Europe and the Caribbean Sea. He always knew which highways to take to reach your destination the quickest and some would even say he was a "modern day Google Maps." José most likely had the biggest sweet tooth of anyone you know. It was rare to visit his house without finding pan dulce on his dining table. He enjoyed various outdoor activities and sports such as boating, fishing, camping and baseball. José was a loyal fan to the Spurs and Cowboys. He enjoyed dancing and family gatherings, especially with his children and grandchildren. He was a kind soul that would always help anyone in need. Josè was a great husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and friend. His loving spirit will live on for those who knew him and loved him. He will be dearly missed.
