Mr. John Phillip Smalling passed away on Sunday, October 31, 2021 at the age of 71. John served in the U.S. Air Force, received a Bachelors and Master's degree from Southwest Texas in and a Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) St. Mary's University. He worked at Southwest Texas State University, Lamar University, practiced law and taught at Harlandale High School and Palo Alto College. John always said that although he enjoyed working in other professions he found his passion in teaching government to students. He enjoyed hiking and traveling throughout the Texas Hill country until his illness made it difficult.

John is survived by his wife of 33 years, Maria Ramos-Smalling. He was proceeded in death by his parents Otha and Lois Jean Smalling, brother, Richard Smalling, Jesusita Ramos (mother-in-law) Delfina and Joe Garza (in-law) and great nephew Joseph Garza.  He is survived by his brothers David (Sherrie) Smalling and Harlan Smalling, nieces Michele Smalling, Norma Garza, Olga (Jesse) Cardona, nephew Dr. Mario (Tanya) Garza, and great nieces Claudia, Gabriela, Sophia and Liliana and great nephew Andres plus many cousins, friends and colleagues.
