John Naranjo
September 11th, 1942 – December 24th, 2024
John Naranjo, a devoted educator and beloved family man, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2024 at the age of 82. He was born on September 11, 1942, in San Antonio, Texas, to Joe and Alice Naranjo. John was the loving brother to Joe, Dan, and Yolanda.
John's lifelong dedication to education spanned 36 years. He began his career as a high school teacher, later becoming the principal of Southside High School, Olmos and Woodstone Elementary, and serving as the Personnel Director for Northeast Independent School District (NEISD). His commitment to enhancing educational opportunities for all students was evident throughout his career. He was particularly proud of his role in implementing the Affirmative Action program and recruiting bilingual teachers. John's outstanding contributions to human relations were recognized in March 1981 when the Texas State Teachers Association awarded him and his wife, Angie, the first joint Human Relations Award in TSTA history.
John will be remembered as a trailblazer and a pillar of strength. As one of the first Mexican American educators in his field, he faced many challenges but always remained committed to his students and colleagues. His impact on the lives he touched is immeasurable, and he leaves behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and love.
John's love for his work was only matched by his love for his family. In 1965, he married Angelina Saenz, the love of his life, at Saint Mary's Catholic Church. Together, they built a life filled with love, joy, and adventure. Over the course of their 59 years of marriage, they raised their children, Alice (and husband Randy), Johnny (and wife Veronica), and cherished their beautiful grandchildren, Keith, Brett, Victoria, and Lauren.
After retiring from NEISD in May 2000, John enjoyed traveling with his family. His adventures took him across the globe, with trips to Alaska, Europe, Rome, Greece, Mexico, and many National Parks and Fun filled Family trips to Disney World and many Beautiful Beach Family Trips. And He also cherished quiet moments spent at their Angel Wing Ranch. He loved spending time at his home and watching movies and shows with Angie.
John's love for music was more than just a hobby—it was a reflection of his soul. Curating his daily playlist was a cherished ritual, a way for him to connect with the rhythms of life. Attending concerts with his son brought him immense joy, especially in the shared experience of live performances from his favorite artists. His passion for sports ran deep, and his unwavering loyalty to the Dallas Cowboys and San Antonio Spurs was a testament to his dedication. He will forever treasure the memory of watching the Spurs' 2003 live championship on Father's Day with his son, a moment of triumph that bound them together in joy. His visit to the original Yankee Stadium in 2008 was a dream come true; a memory etched in his heart. As much as he loved the excitement of sports, nothing compared to the pride he felt watching his son play in junior golf tournaments. And hearing his daughter Alice recount her students' stories—her love for teaching echoing through every word—was a constant reminder of his own career as a teacher and principal. He beamed with pride as he witnessed Alice's accomplishments, knowing that she had inherited his passion for making a difference in the lives of others. Every moment, every story, every game was a cherished piece of the beautiful legacy he built with his family.
John was a cherished and respected member of his community, and his legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and many dear friends and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Alice, and his brother Joe Jr. and sister Yolanda.
John's life was a testament to the power of education, love, and family. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
