Obituary

An obituary is a record of a lifetime someone has lived.  Such is the life of Dr. John J. Cegelski Jr., D.O.; who was a man for all seasons.

Dr. John Cegelski Jr., to many, was a gifted Violinist, who began playing at the age of 4.  At the age of 10, he was awarded a full scholarship to the Julliard School of Music in New York City.

He began giving concerts at various universities, military bases, auditoriums, here in San Antonio; around Texas and in New York City.  He always received warm accolades and standing ovations from the soldiers and the audiences he played for.  He even received a letter from President Roosevelt for entertaining our soldiers during the trying times of defending our country in W.W.II.

He graduated from Central Catholic– Fall 1946; completed his B.S. Degree – St. Mary's University in 1949; M.S. degree from Trinity University- Spring 1951.

He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.  Completing his tour of duty he took a break and traveled to Australia for 1 ½ years.  He applied and he was accepted to Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in 1958 and graduated in 1961.

He began his general practice of 48 years from 1962 until 2010, at 2806 West Southcross in the Southwest part of San Antonio.  During the 48 years he practiced, in one location, and he was never sued for malpractice.

When he began practicing medicine, he delivered over 2,500 babies.  He invested in his patients by providing the best equipped office he could provide.  He began slowly-one piece of equipment at a time.  He purchased the X-ray machine; then the EKG; as the equipment became available he started buying physical therapy equipment; a hearing test machine to do physicals on; diathermy ultrasound and last but not least the laboratory upon the inception of his laboratory, he began acquiring new equipment; some which used gallons of reagents.  In the 60's, they use to mix the reagents to do the test.  Result: Cost of reagents were cheap-profit great.  He did lab work for 10 other Dr.'s until state regulations came in.  He was the company Dr. for 3 large corporations during the Vietnam Conflict.

He began participating in his District, State and Regional Medical Associations where his leadership abilities rose him up to be President of the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association in 1980.

During his Presidency he was appointed to the Board of the Professional Medical Insurance Co. which dealt in malpractice liability insurance.  After 3 years, he was elected to the Board of Directors-Board of Trustees.

He continued his post graduate education by attending the Harvard School of Medicine, studying eight important subjects of medicine to aid in his diagnosing and caring for his patients, he was devoted to.

He began post graduate work with Masters and Johnson.  Upon completing his post graduate work with Masters and Johnson, he became Board Certified as a member of their college, Doctor of Social Dysfunction.

In 1988, he began working for the Social Security Administration and did so for the next 20 years; working part-time as a medical expert, providing a report and giving testimony for the client, if they met or equaled a listing to receive disability under the guidelines of the Social Security Administration.  He was one of the best doctors the Social Security ever hired.

He was a gifted Violinist, Student, Soldier, Doctor of Family Medicine; Politician-President of his Medical Profession; Board of Directors- Trustee for a malpractice insurance company; Medical Testimony provider for Social Security; and received Board Certification under the auspices of Master and Johnson, for sexual dysfunction; with all the people he come in contact with and for the many reasons, he was definitely a medical expert, a man for all seasons, for many.  Need I forget, he was the son of John and Estelle Cegelski.  Like father – like son he was like his father who practiced Dentistry for over 50 years, who was awarded the Knight of St. Gregory.  In 1973, he bought his father a new automobile that was paid in full.  He gave his father the auto as a token of his love and appreciation for all his parents had done for him.

In 1969, he married Shirley Ann Sechriest Cegelski and was devoted to her for the 56 years they were married in the Catholic Church.  They worked together in his practice and all his endeavors he accomplished in his life.  He passed away the morning of 22 February 2025, at the age of 95.
