In loving memory of Jesus P. Vasquez, who passed away on May 21, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on June 30, 1953, in Laredo, Texas, and throughout his life, he embodied resilience, compassion, and a zest for life that touched everyone he met.
Jesus, affectionately known as Chuyin, grew up in the vibrant neighborhoods called Azteca in Laredo, where he was known for his infectious laughter, radiant smile, and boundless energy. His upbringing on the dirt streets of 109 Hidalgo instilled in him a deep sense of community and a spirit of generosity that defined his character.
A proud graduate of Martin High School, Jesus embraced the American dream with gusto, excelling not only on the football field but also in leadership roles such as the student council and ROTC. His unwavering motto, "Once a Tiger, always a tiger," echoed through every celebration, a testament to his enduring loyalty and pride in his alma mater.
Following high school, Jesus embarked on a remarkable journey with the United States Army, traversing the globe and leaving a trail of cherished memories in Germany, Hawaii, Paris, The Netherlands, South Korea, and various corners of his homeland. A staunch advocate for his beliefs and a champion of the Hispanic community, he served with honor during Desert Storm, earning the esteemed title of honorary veteran. He served 18 years, 6 months and 28 days in the US Army as a combat medic.
Transitioning to civilian life in 1995, Jesus embarked on a new chapter, dedicating himself to the noble profession of nursing. From the burn unit, to the emergency room and eventually the ICU, he selflessly served for 20 years within The Baptist, Nix, and University Hospitals, touching countless lives with his compassion and expertise. His commitment to the well-being of others extended beyond the hospital walls, as he nurtured future healthcare professionals at Saint Phillips College, empowering them to realize their dreams as CNAs and LVNs. Concluding 10 years as a medical assistant instructor for the iBest and HPOG programs within the Alamo Community Colleges.
Jesus's greatest belief was in the potential of every individual to succeed given the opportunity, encouragement, and training. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, resilience, and unwavering faith in the human spirit.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Jesus and Victoria, his daughter Valerie, and his brother Fernando. He is survived by his loving wife Celia, his children; Melissa, Jesus J, and Andrew, grandchildren; Zachery and Zoey, siblings; Francisco, Jose, Anna, their spouses and children.
Jesus will be deeply missed by his extended family, army comrades, fellow veterans, colleagues, friends, and students. Though he may be gone, his spirit lives on in the countless lives he touched and the enduring impact of his personal motto; Adjust, Adapt, Overcome, Improvise!
May his memory be a blessing and his legacy a guiding light for generations to come.
