James (Jim) Robert Morris, 80, passed away on March 24, 2023, at the VA Community Living Center in San Antonio, TX, after a long illness. Born in Dennison, Ohio on June 1, 1942, Jim graduated from Washington High School in Phoenix, AZ, in 1960. He then enlisted in the United States Navy after high school and served on active duty until 1970. During his time in service he was stationed on various repair ships including the USS Bryce Canyon, USS Cadmus, USS Hector, and the Aircraft Supercarrier USS Forrestal. After discharge from the Navy, he worked as a professional welder until his retirement.
Having grown up in a family of Pennsylvania Railroad engineers, it was no surprise that Jim fostered a lifelong passion for all things railroad. From collecting memorabilia, following trains, and even voluntarily providing welding work on a steam engine, his interest never waned.
Jim also had a special fondness for animals, particularly dogs. He had an especially close bond to his beloved dog, Tippy.
In his free time, Jim enjoyed trips to the shooting range with friends, working outside in the garden – especially tending to his collection of unique cacti, and attending Native American cultural events. He also found a profound happiness in listening to music and dancing, particularly square and round dancing.
He also had a lifelong dream of being a cowboy which was evident in his preference for western attire that includes a collection of cowboy hats and western boots.
Throughout his life, Jim maintained a close relationship with God which brought him a great deal of fulfillment and sustained him through his illness.
We want to especially thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Community Living Center at Audie Murphy VA Hospital for their loving and compassionate care of Jim.
