Obituary

Hortense L. Mendez, a cherished mother and devoted wife, peacefully passed away on August 15th, at 90. Survived by her husband, Rene of 70 years, their children: Roland (Blanca), Cynthia Adcock, Gabriel, and Andrew. Her legacy includes twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents Dolores and Ignacio Longoria, son Rene, and her siblings: Santos, Manuel, Johnny, Margaret, Ignacio, and Susie.

Hortense found love at Fine Silver Textiles in 1952. She worked as a seamstress, while Rene worked as a cloth cutter on the production floor where their paths first crossed. Shortly after, their connection deepened, leading to marriage and the joyful expansion of their family.

While nurturing her children, Hortense devoted 20 years to working as a pastry cook for the San Antonio School District. In 1992, her dedication was recognized with a commendation that celebrated her exceptional contributions to the district—a testament to her positive impact on both students and colleagues alike.

Amidst her tenure in the school district, a unique proposal surfaced from their neighbor, Mr. Oertling, a successful businessman. Impressed by the tamales he received as a Christmas gift, he envisioned partnering with Hortense to establish a tamale factory, an idea ahead of its time. Although the concept held great potential, Hortense's priority remained caring for her family, prompting her to gracefully decline.

Transitioning from her school district role, Hortense returned to her clothes making roots at Ivory Coast Textiles. Here, her skills as a seamstress flourished, and Rene joined her as the lead cloth cutter, a harmonious reunion mirroring the time when they first met. Their significance to the company became evident when, in the face of owners' resistance to reasonable safety accommodations for new hires, Hortense's determination sparked change. Uttering the words, "Let's go, Rene," she orchestrated a transformation that benefitted all employees.

Hortense's devotion extended to St. Ann's Catholic Church, where she served as a CCD instructor and brought solace to homebound parishioners through the delivery of the consecrated host. Hortense was a Legion dedicated to the Blessed Mother. And as such it might make sense that when she passed it was on the feast day of the Assumption of Mary. Additionally, Hortense and Rene were among the first couples to join St. Ann's Parish after the church's expansion and the establishment of the school in the 1950s.

Hortense's life unfolded like a fine garment, woven with threads of dedication, compassion, and resilience. Her legacy radiates through her nurturing presence as a loving mother and devoted wife. Her unwavering commitment to family, community, and faith continues to inspire all who are fortunate enough to have known her.
