Our beloved Henry S. Smith Jr. "Smitty," 84, passed away May 12, 2015 with his family by his side. Smitty was born March 29, 1931, in Metaltown, West Virginia. He met and fell in love with his wife Irene (Herrera) while in basic training at Lackland AFB. He proudly served 4 years in the Korean War and continued a 36 year civil service career at Kelly AFB. Smitty was a thoughtful man who embraced life and his extended family all his life. Married for 66 years, he and his wife were long-time members of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and St. Dominic's Catholic Church. They were also avid U.T. Longhorn supporters and high school sports boosters for as long as they were able. Smitty is survived by his wife, Irene; 5 children: Carol, Gary (Linda), Deborah (Richard), Larry (Karen) and Barry; 6 grandchildren: Casey, Elizabeth, Nicholas, Travis, Lee and Darren; 5 great-grandchildren. Visitation will begin Monday at 5:00 P.M. in The Angelus Chapel with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 P.M. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 12:00 P.M. at St. Dominic's Catholic Church, 5919 Ingram Rd. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with military honors.
