Obituary

Her heart beat for 36,650 days. 100 years and four months, to the day. Her time on earth is more than most of us get. Her story is more than many of us could imagine. Guadalupe Castillo came into the world on July 11, 1919 in Laredo, Texas. She will join her beloved husband, Bernardo Louis Fernandez, in heaven. Her mother and father, Adela and Felix Castillo, brothers Mayo, David and her sister, Clementina Castillo have her in their loving embrace, along with her son, Fidel Fernandez.

She left this world with a veritable army of loving family, all of whom miss her already and are honored to be her family. She is survived by her sister, Janie Medellin; daughters, Elizabeth Escalera and Mary Ann Aguilar and her husband, Carlos; and her daughter-in-law, Pauline Fernandez. She is also survived by her son, Ralph, and his wife, Maria.

Grandma Lupe's grandchildren also love and honor her memory: Kathy Streckfuss, and husband, John; Derek Escalera, Fidel Fernandez, Jr., Michael Fernandez, Ande Aguilar and his wife, Jenifer; Deanna Bernardo and her husband, Michael; Lisa Aguilar, Andrea Hernandez, and her husband, Tony; David Fernandez and wife, Lesly; Raphael Fernandez and his wife, Amber; and Julian Fernandez.

Mama, as her great children called her, adored them as much as she did them. Sarah Taylor, Catherine Taylor, Sabrina Escalera, Derek Escalera, Jr., Faith Fernandez, Sofia Aguilar, Stella Aguilar, Elyse Dyer, Emilio, Nolan, Mateo and Mia Hernandez and Benjamin Fernandez.

Lupe was a eucharistic minister at St. Paul's Catholic Church, where she was also a member of the Choir. She was a lifetime member of the San Antonio Conservation Society, who served on the committee for the revered, Night In Old San Antonio (NIOSA). She worked in the library of the San Antonio Conservation Society's library, she was passionate about preservation of the myriad historical buildings in San Antonio. She earned her Associate's Degree from San Antonio College in her 60s. She was a dedicated supporter of the arts. In fact, her daughter, Mary Ann, was a ballerina for the San Antonio Ballet.

Visitation and rosary will be on Sunday, November 17, from 5pm to 7pm at Angelus Funeral Home, 1119 N. St. Mary's Street, San Antonio, Texas, 78215. The funeral mass will be on Monday, November 18 at 10am at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 350 Sutton Drive, San Antonio, Texas 78228. Internment follows at 12pm, San Fernando Cemetery II, 746 Castroville Road, San Antonio, Texas 78237.

Cada cabeza es su mundo. May her memory be a blessing to all whose lives she touched. Not one of us has lived a day without her. She will live in each of our souls for eternity. Te Amo.
