Gloria L. Solis, age 82, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 12, 2018, at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. She was born Maria Gloria Luna to Lorenzo and Delfina Luna on October 20, 1935 in Laredo, Texas. Gloria was raised in Laredo, Texas until her family moved to San Antonio, where she went on to graduate from Edgewood High School. She married the love of her life Raul Solis Sr. on June 30, 1957.
Gloria is survived by her husband of 60 years, Raul Solis Sr.; her children, Raul (Gerri) Solis Jr., Raquel (Roberto, M.D.) San Martin, Diana (Ernest) Rivas, and Javier (Veronica) Solis; grandchildren, Steven Solis, M.D., Matthew Solis, Daniel Solis, Mario Raul Fuentes, Lorraine Benavides, Anthony Rivas, Selena Alexander, Nathan Rivas, Rey Martinez, Victoria Solis, Javier Solis Jr.; great grandchildren, Miguel Ancira, Andrew Solis, Ava Solis, Isaiah Solis, Anthony(Joey) Rivas, Adalia Rivas, Adric Rivas, Layla Langston, Dominic Rivas, Dylon Rivas, Natalyn Rivas; siblings, Arturo Luna, Delia Rosas, and Juan T Luna; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She is predeceased by her parents, Lorenzo and Delfina Luna; son, David Solis; siblings, Lorenzo Luna Jr., Virginia Pena, Roberto Luna, and Yolanda Martinez.
Our beloved mother was born only one block away from her future husband. She fondly recalled the memory of Raul walking her home from school, carrying her books, and stopping one block away from the house so her father would not get mad at them. Her family moved to San Antonio in 1950, where she would later be re-united with Raul who had joined the Air Force and completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base. They stayed in touch throughout his four years of service, writing letters back and forth while Raul traveled until June 30, 1957 when they wed. They would purchase their first and only home soon after, located on Hatton Drive where they raised all five of their children. The one thing that meant most to Gloria - was family. She created a loving home centered around building an environment filled with love and support of one another. Endless birthday parties, barbeques, Cowboys and Spurs games, or the famous New Year's Eve party - the house was always filled with love and joy. She was a great example of what it meant to be a generous and a gracious hostess, always ready to open her door and make sure her guests were offered something to eat and/or drink. Gloria and Raul were always willing to provide help and support to their family, ensuring that everyone was taken care of. They worked hard to provide the best education for their children and grandchildren. They were frugal in their personal wants and needs, and very generous to friends and family. Our mother also worked at Madonna Center when her youngest child started school and it turned in to a full time job for 13 years where she continued her ministry of love.
She cared for her mother-in-law in her final years just as she did for her own mother and father. When her sisters, Virginia and Yolanda passed away, she made sure to always reach out to their children to make sure they were not forgotten and to remain attached to the Luna-Fajardo family. She was the glue and constant advocate of family, making sure no one would be forgotten and all would be included.
In that spirit we are compelled to carry on her love of family, friends and support of each other as we move forward, never forgetting that we are better and stronger together than as individuals.
