In Loving Memory of Gloria Contreras
July 10, 1938 – December 6, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gloria Contreras, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt. Gloria departed this life on December 6, 2024, at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and compassion.
Born on July 10, 1938, in San Antonio, Texas, Gloria was the youngest of nine children born to Antonio and Josefina Gutierrez. She grew up surrounded by the love of her family and cherished her close bond with her siblings. Gloria's sister, Mary Nunez, remains as the last surviving member of their generation, carrying forward the family's treasured memories.
Gloria was the devoted wife of Jesse Contreras, with whom she shared many beautiful years until his passing in 1995. Together, they built a loving home and raised four children, Jesse Contreras (Dora), Irma Martinez (Paul), Raquel Garcia (Robert), and Daniel Contreras (Lorena). Gloria's pride and joy were her family, which grew to include 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, each of whom she adored and cherished deeply; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families.
A dedicated educator, Gloria worked as a paraprofessional at Fort Sam Elementary for 30 years, retiring in 1999. Much of her career was spent working with special education students, a role she embraced with patience and care. Gloria loved her work and the children she taught, leaving a lasting impression on countless young lives. Her nurturing spirit and unwavering commitment to her students exemplified her passion for helping others.
Gloria's greatest role, however, was as a loving matriarch. She dedicated her life to her family, always putting their needs before her own. Whether picking up and dropping off her grandchildren at school, babysitting, or offering her unconditional love, Gloria was a constant source of support and warmth. Her home was a haven of laughter, kindness, and delicious home-cooked meals, creating memories her family will treasure forever.
Gloria will be remembered for her selflessness, her gentle strength, and her unwavering faith in God. Her legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched and the love she so freely gave. Though our hearts ache in her absence, we find solace in knowing that she is reunited with our father and her loved ones who have gone before her.
A celebration of Gloria's life will be held to honor her memory and the incredible person she was.
