Obituary

Genevieve Guerrero passed away on September 3rd. She was 91 years old. Genevieve grew up on the West side with 5 sisters and 2 brothers. She had ambition and drive and when the sexism and racism of her day shut the door on being a journalist; she instead got her Master's Degree in education from Our Lady of the Lake University. Genevieve then went on to a storied career in San Antonio's public schools, first as a third grade teacher and then as a Principal. She impacted generations of kids at schools like Storm, Margil and Pershing Elementaries. She truly loved her job. And over family lunches on Sundays she always told stories about the kids, their families and the schools she led. But she had to fight to be a Principal. Because for years, she watched lesser qualified men get ahead while she stayed behind. She sued the San Antonio Independent School District, won a settlement, a promotion and opened the door for all the young Latina women to come after her. In 1982 the Express News ran an article about Genevieve. The headline was: Sex Bias Battle Didn't Come Easy.

But Genevieve was more than just her career. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews who adored and admired her. They remember the beautiful handmade Easter baskets she made out of crepe paper and milk cartons she would save all year. And the way she drilled phonetics and taught them to read before they were even in kindergarten. She was also fiercely loyal to her many friends and her siblings and cared for them as they endured debilitating illnesses and personal losses. Up to the end Genevieve was still driving and cooking for her two surviving sisters Victoria Guerrero and Elisa Rodriguez. They miss her deeply. And so does the rest of her family. Rest in Peace Nena.
