Francisco "Frank" Sandoval Castillo
August 29, 1951 – October 17, 2026
Francisco "Frank" Sandoval Castillo, 75, of San Antonio, Texas, went home to the Lord on October 17, 2026, at Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital, surrounded by the family he loved so deeply.
Frank was born on August 29, 1951, in San Antonio to Francisco Castillo Sr. and Justa Sandoval Castillo, who preceded him in death. A 1969 graduate of Fox Tech High School, he remained a proud San Antonian throughout his life.
As a young man, Frank answered his country's call and served honorably as an Airman in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War with Attack Squadron 165 aboard the aircraft carrier USS Constellation, and also aboard the USS Midway, now a museum ship in San Diego. His service was a source of lasting pride for him and for everyone who loved him.
After returning home, Frank studied business real estate at San Antonio College, and in 1977, he began a 36-year career with the U.S. Postal Service. As a distribution clerk, he helped countless customers at the window, trained and supervised fellow clerks, and guided many San Antonians through their passport applications. He retired in 2014.
A man of deep faith, Frank was a longtime parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, and his faith was a steady foundation for him and his family.
Frank knew how to enjoy life. A lifelong golfer, he was happiest on the course, and he loved to fish. He remained a loyal Dallas Cowboys and San Antonio Spurs fan through every season, good and bad. During the last 20 years of his life, Frank discovered a love of travel, culture, and cuisine, exploring destinations across the United States, Central and South America, Europe, and Asia, despite physical challenges in recent years. He loved mariachi music, live concerts, a good fireworks show, and making people laugh—often simply by sharing his own infectious laugh!
Above all, Frank loved his family. They were his greatest joy and his proudest accomplishment. A devoted husband, loving father to his four daughters, and proud grandfather, he leaves a legacy of love that will live on in each of them. To his cousins, their children, and their friends, he was affectionately known as "Uncle Frank"—a name that reflected his place in the hearts of generations. His absence will be keenly felt at family gatherings, in everyday conversations, and in the moments they will wish they could share with him just one more time.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Emma Castillo; his daughters, Elaine Castillo, Annalisa Castillo, Laura Castillo, and Francesca Johnson; his son-in-law, Andrew Johnson; his grandchildren, Patrick Castillo, Ellie Johnson, and Lyna Johnson; his sister, Margarita Orozco; his brothers, Edward Castillo and Roger Sandoval; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Though his family's hearts are heavy, they take comfort in knowing he is at peace and at home.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Maria Vargas, Frank's devoted caregiver, whose kindness and care made her part of the family. They are also sincerely grateful to the doctors, nurses, and staff of Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital for the compassionate care they gave Frank through his journey.
