Obituary

Fr. Quentin Hakenewerth, S.M. died in the service of the Blessed Virgin Mary on March 4, 2026, at the age of 96 with 77 years of vowed life. He was born in Old Monroe, Missouri to Andrew and Wilhelmina (Burkemper) Hakenewerth on January 9, 1930, the youngest of four boys. He is survived by ten nieces and nephews and numerous cousins.

Fr. Quentin first met the Marianists as a freshman student at Chaminade College Prep and then transferred to Maryhurst Preparatory, graduating from there in 1947. After high school, he entered the Marianist Novitiate in Galesville, Wisconsin and professed his First Vows on August 15, 1948. He earned his B.S. (Education) in 1951 from the University of Dayton and went on to profess his perpetual vows in 1952 in Galesville, Wisconsin.

From 1951 1956 Bro. Quentin taught religion and social studies at St. Mary's High School and Coyle ((later Vianney) High School in St. Louis, Missouri. Following five years of secondary teaching, he began his theological studies in 1956 at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland and was ordained to the priesthood on July 17, 1960. After serving as a chaplain and teacher for two years at Don Bosco High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Fr. Quentin began graduate studies at Loyola University in Chicago in 1962 and completed his M.A. in Clinical Psychology in 1964.

Fr. Quentin served one year as chaplain and counselor of the Marianist student brothers in San Antonio when he was appointed the Assistant for Religious Life for the St. Louis Province. Completing his term, he then briefly served as the Director of Scholastics, when he was elected Provincial Superior of the Province.

While serving as a delegate to the international General Chapter of 1981 in Austria, Fr. Quentin was elected to serve as the Assistant General for Religious Life of the entire Congregation in Rome, Italy. Five years later, he was re-elected for a second term. Then in 1991, Fr. Quentin was elected Superior General of the Society of Mary at the General Chapter held in Dayton, Ohio.

After completing a total of fifteen years of leadership in Rome, Fr. Quentin's service to the Society of Mary took a challenging new direction in 1996. He moved to Querétero, Mexico and for the next 27 years worked in many capacities as Novice Master, Director of Pre-Novices, Assistant Formation Director for the Marianist Religious, Chaplain, and Assistant Pastor for lay families, witnessing the Marianist Charism of Father Chaminade each day.

As a Religious leader and spiritual director, Father Quentin authored over many years, several articles in religious and professional journals as well as having written a number of books, including: The Grain of Wheat, Mary in Modern Spirituality, and The Prayer of Faith.  At his 75th jubilee of religious profession, he stated, "As a Marianist, everything I have ever been asked to do in the service of others has brought me greater opportunities to grow myself...I am deeply grateful to the Society of Mary and my fellow brothers for what I am today." And the Lord said, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Memory of Fr. Quentin to the Marianist Mission, Mt. St. John, 4435 East Patterson Road, Dayton, OH, 45430-1033.
