Fidencia Lopez Herrera was born February 5, 1929, to Jose Maria Lopez, Sr. and Irene Montalvo Lopez in Martinez, TX. She went to her eternal reward on May 27, 2026.
Fidencia, better known as Felipa, was born into a migrant family where she learned the importance of hard work. Being the youngest of 16 children allowed her the opportunity to go to school by staying with her older siblings while the rest of the family went to work. Next to her passion for her Catholic faith and upbringing, was her passion for learning. She had to leave school after 9th grade but continued educating herself through reading. She and her late husband Guillermo had to leave the family farm due to serious drought and crop failure conditions. They moved to Boerne in 1951. Here she became a member of the Legion of Mary where she and a partner would go visit families and pray with them. If they needed anything she would take them food or whatever was needed.
As she was a stay-at-home mom, she volunteered to transport the children after school to CCD classes at the Catholic Church. She volunteered to clean the church on Saturdays. When the dream of a Mother's Day Out Program became a reality at the Monastery, she helped to get it started as a babysitter. She often volunteered at Children's Inn (a home for disabled children). If anyone, including her children, needed help, she was the first to volunteer.
When her husband retired, they returned to the family farm in Melvin. There she joined the Helping Hands Program which helps underprivileged individuals with food, clothing, and socialization. She helped with translation and transportation of individuals to their immigration appointments.
In 1997, after her husband went on to his eternal reward, she moved to San Antonio with one of her daughters. She continued traveling to the farm taking whichever grandchild was willing to accompany her. After several years her daughter had a son and she helped to care for him.
She is survived by 5 of her 8 children: Sr. Ursula Herrera, OSB, Irene (Guadalupe) Garcia, Norma Elia Shinn, Paul (Velda) Herrera, Theresa (Steve) H. Almanza; daughters-in-law: Hilda Herrera and Ruthie Herrera and son-in-law Brian Webb. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren plus many nieces and nephews.
