Mrs. Evelyn "Evie" Henderson, born Evelyn Onofre, passed away Thursday, July 13, 2023 in Houston, TX after a recent hospitalization. She was 71.
Evelyn was born November 10, 1951, in San Antonio, TX. She was the third of four children born to Catherine Diaz. She grew up in San Antonio the majority of her formative years, attending Memorial High School. After high school, she married Andrew Fernandez III in 1970 and relocated to Austin, TX. They eventually moved to Houston, TX, where she would reside the rest of her life. In 1987, she married William "Bobby" Henderson, to whom she remained happily married until the time of her passing.
Evelyn celebrated a 35 year career working for Kelsey-Seybold, a multi-specialty medical group practice, where she began as a clinic receptionist and rose in rank to insurance auditor before her retirement. She was gregarious and fun loving and made countless friends during her lifetime and career. She was an all-around sports enthusiast, but above all loved her Houston Astros. Her guilty pleasure was playing the slots in Louisiana and Las Vegas with Bobby and friends. The annual Cozumel trips she and Bobby took with friends are legendary. She was the acting family matriarch, always helping with planning the family birthday brunches at restaurants. She was an excellent cook, loved her family dearly, and always kept her hometown of San Antonio in her heart.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Catherine "Kippy" Diaz and Delfino Onofre, son, Andrew "Andy Boy" Fernandez, and maternal grandparents: Sophia B. and Juan Martinez.
She is survived by her husband, William Henderson, and daughter, Cynthia Romero (Arturo); siblings: Mary "Nena" Fahy, Jessie Onofre, and Jo Ann Jordan (Patrick); stepfather, Juan Diaz; niece, Virginia "Gina" Collier (Cedric); and her Yorkshire Terrier, Zeek.
