Obituary

Ernest Frank "Sonny" Travieso, loving husband, father, grandfather, and uncle, entered eternal life on August 28, 2022 at the age of 88. He was born on June 28, 1934 in San Antonio, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents Ernest H. and Bertha Travieso, and daughter Debra Castañeda. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Louisa Travieso, and children, Henrietta De La Garza, Ernest A. Travieso and wife Lucille; grandchildren Thomas De La Garza, Erika Travieso Wade and husband Jeremy, Veronica and Michael Castañeda, Olivia, Felicia and Cecilia Travieso; great-grandchildren Alexis Anderson and husband Traylor, Westley Larson, Avery Williams, Jonah Wade, Gavin Camacho, Gabriel De La Garza; and two great-great-grandchildren Silas and Jackson Anderson.

As a child, Ernest met his future wife while they were both attending St. Henry's Catholic School, and they were inseparable ever since. He worked in local meat markets and became a skilled meat cutter. He later owned and operated Travieso Grocery & Market on W. Martin St., where he was able to use his experience and meat cutting skills to serve the community on the Westside of San Antonio, where he and his family lived. Later in life, he worked at the San Antonio State Hospital, where he designed and built vocational jigs to assist individuals with physical disabilities. He loved utilizing his skills to be able to help others.

Sonny enjoyed going to the beach, camping, fishing, taking road trips, and spending time with his family and friends. He valued being there for his family above all else. This was instilled in him by his parents and his grandparents, Justo and Otilia Travieso. He looked forward to birthdays, holidays, family vacations, Sunday barbecues, and the annual Travieso Family Reunion, where the extended families of each of Justo and Otilia's children would gather together. As a descendant of the Canary Islander Vicente Alvarez Travieso, one of the founders of San Antonio's municipal government and Mayor of San Antonio in 1776, Sonny took pride in carrying and passing on the Travieso name and its historical significance to his children and grandchildren.

A Rosary will be recited on Tuesday, September 6, at 6:30 PM in The Angelus Chapel. Funeral Mass will be offered on Wednesday, September 7, at 11:00 AM at St. Henry's Catholic Church. Interment will follow at San Fernando Archdiocesan Cemetery No 2.  Condolences may be sent to the Travieso family at www.theangelusfuneralhome.com.
