ENRIQUETA C. RESENDEZ
July 15, 1919 - July 16, 2018
Born to Jose Maria and Acencion V. Cuellar in San Antonio, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Victor Resendez, Jr.; sons, Ramon and Victor; siblings and wives, Celso V. Cuellar, Paulino and Dolores Cuellar, Fernando and Refugia "Tia Cuca" Cuellar, and Trinidad V. Perez.
Enriqueta is survived by her son, Lorenzo Resendez; sister, Beatrice Cuellar; daughter in law, Mary Resendez; granddaughters, Jennifer (Scott) Resendez-Wilson and Kristina (Steve) Heilman; great grandsons, Holden and Graham Heilman; and numerous nieces, nephews, and their families; and comadre, Aurora Chavez.
Mother raised 3 sons following her husband's death in 1949, helped by her parents, brothers, and their families-her sons always being part of the extended family. She provided her sons an education in the church, Holy Cross High School, and St. Mary's University – all 3 graduating as U.S. Army Commissioned Officers.
Enriqueta was among the first CCD Lay teachers at Our Lady of Good Counsel, helping the Sisters of the Holy Family from nearby St. Jude Catholic Church and the Oblate priest at Our Lady of Good Counsel. She taught after school catechism classes and what would now be called Vacation Bible School to prepare the children of the parish for the sacraments.
Mom received excellent care from long-time family physician Dr. Joseph Heny, MD and his clinic assistant Maria Agueros, along with the VITAS hospice staff, especially nurse George Fox, RN. Thank you also to the compassionate companions provided on occasion by Caring Senior Services and Sisters Care at the Village at Incarnate Word. I extend my sincere gratitude to Yajaira Montor Contreras and her mother Maria Montor Contreras for their warmth and obvious affection for mom in their gentle care for her this year. I thank all of you for your visits with mom, especially Clara Martinez, sister in law Aurora Chavez, nephew Fernando Cuellar, Jr., her sister Beatrice, friend Minnie, and granddaughters Kristina and Jennifer. I thank Father Fidele Okitembo Dikete of St. John Berchmans Catholic Church for his home visit to anoint Mom. I can't thank enough my late brother Victor's sister in law and good friend, Alice Valle and her daughter, Patty Smith, RN and brother Bobby for their loving care and support for Mom (Grandma "Dida") and me whenever needed.
Forgive me if I have forgotten anyone in my thanks for their kindness and caring words or gestures but be assured they were appreciated. Finally my deepest thanks and gratitude to Lay Eucharistic Minister for the sick and home bound, Carol Taylor, from the Church of the Holy Spirit for her cheerful weekly visits the past 11 months with prayer and the Eucharist for both mom and I. Mrs. Taylor knows how much that has meant to my mother and me in our spiritual lives, helping mom with a peaceful death.
Her son, Lorenzo
