Our precious Uncle Henry was called to be with the Heavenly Father on May 28, 2024.
Enrique Solis Menchaca was born February 20, 1944, in San Antonio, Texas. He was seventh of the eight children of Augustine Menchaca and Maria Solis Menchaca. Enrique's early childhood was spent in San Antonio, until his parents moved the family to California in 1953.
While in Planada, California, Enrique resumed his education and graduated from Le Grand High School, as the Senior Class President of 1962. Upon completion of high school, Enrique returned to San Antonio to attend college. However, his education was interrupted by the Vietnam War.
In 1966, he enlisted in the United States Army, training and serving his country as a Pharmacy Specialist. Having completed his military service in 1969, he returned home to pursue his college education. He received his bachelor's degree in Psychology at St. Mary's University in 1972. Enrique's professional career as a Master Social Worker for the San Antonio State Hospital (1977-1999) gave him the opportunity to travel to many regional communities and to provide critical mental health services to those in need.
Upon retiring, Henry dedicated his time and caring to family in Texas and in California, and he considered himself to have "dual citizenship" of both states! Those who had the chance to spend time with him during those years had the benefit of his efforts as a babysitter, school taxi driver, pep-talker, homework helper, personal chef, active listener, and confidant. When he had the opportunity to travel, Henry enjoyed the beaches of Cancun, Mexico, the many towns of the California coast, the state parks and lakes of Texas, and the bright lights of Las Vegas, Nevada.
His last year of life was spent becoming a beloved member of the Madison Estates Active Living community. During his time as a resident, he made many dear friends, served as the resident association vice-president, and participated in activities such as fine arts, water aerobics, and non-denominational prayer services. All the while, he planned his epic 80th birthday celebration which brought together almost 80 family members from all over Texas, California, Tennessee, Arizona, and Canada. His dream of creating a joyful family reunion for his birthday was truly realized on February 17, 2024.
Enrique was preceded in death by his parents, Augustine and Maria, and his siblings, Reymundo, Dora, Benjamin, Daniel, Santos, and Linda. Henry is survived by his older brother Hector Menchaca, who resides in California, as well as his sisters-in-law Amelia Menchaca and Irene Menchaca. Additionally, he is survived by 11 nephews, 12 nieces and numerous great (and great-great AND great-great-great!) nieces and nephews. He is also survived by countless cousins and friends throughout many states.
Henry's kind, selfless, unconditional love and dedication to his family will always be his strong legacy and he will be deeply missed. In response to a question about words he lives by, Henry recently said "God has always put me where He needs me, and I've always seen myself as His servant."
