Obituary

Eliseo Garcia Navarro, age 89, of San Antonio, departed this life on Friday, August 1, 2014. Eliseo is survived by his children, Ricardo, Diana, and Carlos; his sister, Maria Concepcion Navarro Perez; as well as by 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Eliseo was born on March 5, 1925 in Asherton, Texas to Aurelio Navarro and Maria Refugia Garcia de Navarro. He was the second of four siblings, Jose (Joe), Aurelio (Nick), and Maria Concepcion (Connie). He graduated from Asherton High School, and he went on to serve his country in WWII in the European theatre. Eliseo, like so many others war veterans of his generation, took advantage of his GI benefits, and after the war began educating himself. He graduated with a BA from the University of Texas in Austin, and he obtained his Master's Degree in Social Work from Our Lady of the Lake College San Antonio. He later also completed a course of studies for his PhD at the University of Chicago. Eliseo always worked and served in the public sector. He began his career as a truant officer for the Eagle Pass ISD in the 1950's, and he also as a probation officer for Bexar County, Texas. In the early 1960's he moved his family to Chicago, where he worked as a probation officer for Cook County, Illinois. Eliseo also began a teaching career while living in Chicago, becoming an associate professor of Social Work at Loyola University. He later taught as a graduate level college professor at the University of Texas in Austin and concluded his college teaching career at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Even after he retired from college teaching, Eliseo, ever the educator, continued to teach in San Antonio at Emma Fry Elementary School in the Edgewood ISD. He never lost his passion for his students, no matter what level. Eliseo had a long and fruitful family life. He met and married Dora Elia Jimenez Saenz, from Nueva Rosita, Coahuila, Mexico, while he was working as a truant officer for the Eagle Pass ISD. Dora Elia was 17 and Eliseo was 29 at the time they married. They had four children: Ricardo (Ric); Maria Teresa (Mayte); Diana Maria (Didi), and Carlos Mario (Calo). Eliseo also later had 6 grandchildren: Cesar Morales; Gabriel (Gabe) Morales; Alejandro (Alex) Navarro, Vanessa Morales; Liliana (Lili) Navarro; and Dora Annette Navarro. At his death, Eliseo had 2 great grandchildren: Anjali Navarro and Ananda Navarro. The long list of other family, friends, colleagues and students that knew Eliseo is unfortunately too long to list, but they are remembered and honored. With his departure from this world, Eliseo now joins his other family in heaven: his wife, Dora Elia,; his brothers, Joe and Nick; his parents, Aurelio and Cuca, not to mention numerous other family and friends. The family will receive family and friends at The Angelus Chapel, 1119 North St. Mary's Street on Tuesday, August 5th, beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Rosary to begin at 7:00 p.m.. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 6th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 1202 So. Zarzamora Street.
