Following a brief illness, Edwin Lee Mueller M.D. passed to his eternal reward peacefully at home surrounded by family on August 3, 2016; he was 89 years old. He was born in San Antonio to Dr. Edwin Leo and Nell Mueller on Sept. 12, 1926. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dr. John Mueller of Seguin. Dr. Ed graduated from Central Catholic High School, St. Mary's University, and received his medical degree from St. Louis University Medical School in 1951. His education was interrupted by World War II during which time he served in the Navy in the Pacific as a Signalman.
Ed married his high school sweetheart, Mary Helen Burkhalter, in 1950 and together they raised their eight children. He served his many patients as their family physician for over forty years, caring for second and third generations of the same families. He retired in 1994 so that he could be more present in the lives of his children and his grandchildren, and more recently, his great grandchildren. He was active in the medical community, serving as President of the Medical Staff of Santa Rosa Northwest Hospital; he was a member of the American Medical Association, Texas Medical Association, Bexar County Medical Society, American Academy of Family Practice, Texas Academy of Family Physicians, and was Chairman of the Bexar County Medical Dinosaurs.
Devoted to his family, his profession, his country and to his Lord, he was active in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church as a Eucharist Minister to the Homebound and a member of the Holy Name Society, VSP and Meals On Wheels. Ed was an Eagle Scout and supported his six sons and many grandsons in their quest for this honor; he also served as Boy Scout Troop Physician. A Knight of St. Gregory the Great, he was also a member of the Oblate Associates, Knights of Columbus and Alhambra de Bejar.
He enjoyed square dancing for twenty five years and looked forward to leading singing of Schnitzelbank at family weddings. An avid hunter and bowler, he bowled a perfect 300 game in league at age 70. He also enjoyed sailing and hosting the family at his Canyon Lake summer home. Dr. Ed will be remembered for his boundless optimism, endearing smile, loving hugs, and infectious laughter and humor.
