Obituary

Edward Coronado Torres passed away peacefully in his home on March 24, 2023, at the age of 72. Preceded in death by his mother Maria Coronado Torres and sister Mary Azalia Torres, Edward was born on May 27th, 1950, in San Antonio, Texas where he grew up on the west side of San Antonio. He attended John F. Kennedy High School and was a proud mighty Rocket.

From high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He trained with the All American 82nd Airborne Division. He served with the elite Sky Soldiers of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Company B, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry "Fury from the Sky Regiment, known as the Red Devils". He shared memories of being a 19-year-old standing with an M60 at the landing zone 'English' in the jungles of Vietnam.

Edward's military awards and decorations include: the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Achievement in Ground Operations Against Hostile Forces, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Parachute Badge, Vietnam Campaign Medal W/60 Device, and Vietnam Service Medal. Post-service Edward continued to give back to his fellow veterans because it was his way of "thanking the Lord for coming back" from Vietnam.

His love of his fellow soldier was never far from his thoughts. He committed his life to volunteering for veterans' organizations and civic engagements in his church and community. Edward came home from Vietnam full of life and lived every day in service to others. Edward would host senior citizen meals and amusement bingos, take monthly trips to feed the homeless and hold his famous annual south side Christmas party beginning in 1996 benefitting all children and families who attended. Through his events he inspired many people to serve alongside him and his family. He was a hardworking man who took care of business.

Most importantly he loved his family, specifically his "Belle" who unconditionally stood by him in life. Culture and tradition had a special place in Edward's heart. He shared his mother's tradition of tamale making with his children and grandchildren bringing him immense joy. He adored and loved his grandchildren and spent his time laughing in their company.

Edward is survived by his loving wife, Mary Belinda Torres; his eldest daughter, Christa Medina her husband Clark and their eight children: Cecily (Rudy), Clarisa, Cerina (Mario), Clark II, Calista, Caroline, Cesar and Cedric; his son, Edward Torres and his wife Miroslava and their two children: Samantha (Tony) and Alexandria; his youngest daughter, Ida Gallegos, her husband Russell and their three children: Russell Jr., Nathan, and Madison; and great-grandchildren: Leo, Mathias, Gabriel, Emma, Mia, and Christalina.
