Dora Carmen Saldana passed away on December 25, 2023 at the age of 89, in her hometown of San Antonio, TX, a city that held her spirit and heart throughout her life. Born January 5, 1934, she was the second youngest among nine siblings, a devoted wife, a cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Dora's professional journey was marked by dedication and excellence, serving in the finance office at Lackland Air Force Base, and as a secretary at both Long Beach Naval Weapon Station and Seal Beach Naval Weapon Station. Her commitment and diligence made a lasting impact in her field.
Outside of her career, Dora found joy in numerous hobbies and pursuits. She was an avid bowler, delightedly participating in both local and traveling leagues. She was an enthusiastic member of the San Antonio Red Hats Society, a group which fosters friendship and camaraderie with fellow women in her community. She found creative expression through poetry, with one of her works chosen for publishing, and a natural talent for dancing, where her passion was evident in the grace with which she moved.
Dora enjoyed gathering with loved ones for game nights, including Bunco with her neighborhood friends, Yahtzee, and various other card games. She loved to entertain, and hosted many pool parties together with her husband at their former home on the far west side of San Antonio. Through numerous road trips, she explored the vast landscapes of the United States and experienced the unique heartbeat of many cities across the country. She treasured time spent with her three great-grandchildren, and her love for them knew no bounds. Her culinary skills were well renowned among family and friends, and there was nothing quite like crowding together at the kitchen table for one of her homemade meals.
Dora was preceded in death by her parents Augustine and Carmen Quiroga Paz, and her siblings Augustine "Tan" Paz (Florence), Olga Paz, Emma Cude (James), Tito Paz (Alicia "Lupe"), Gloria Cantu (Enrique "Ricky"), Alma Paz, Elva Alaniz (Idolio "Al"), Delia Carrillo (Jose "Joe"), and Alicia Paz.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Moses Saldana, her children, Leticia Escobedo (Julian), Norma Saldana (Gary Hurt Jr.), Liche Cavazos (Celso), and Richard Saldana, grandchildren Chere Carpentier (Matthew) and Kame Escobedo, great-grandchildren Sebastian, Delilah, and Max, and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed by all who had the joy and privilege to know and love her.
The family would like to express special gratitude to Dora's son and youngest child, Richard Saldana, as well as the staff of VITAS Healthcare, for their continued care, assistance, and support through this last stretch of her journey home.
