Donald Andrew Small
September 24, 1950 – March 14, 2021
Donald Andrew Small was born in Champaign, Illinois on September 24, 1950. The younger of two boys, Don moved to San Antonio with his family in 1963. Don attended Jefferson High School before heading off to the University of Texas in Austin. While home one weekend from college, Don met the love of his life, Alma Rosa Garza, at Jim's Restaurant (the big hang out) where they were with friends; they married in June of 1970.
Don began his professional career in the food industry, working first for Handy-Andy, then as a food service director at Sid Peterson Hospital in Kerrville, and later for the University of Texas at El Paso. With his commercial success, Don moved back to San Antonio in 1977 to work with his father at the Arcadia Grove Cleaners, which he bought from his dad in 1983. In 1986, Don bought a small corner house in an Alamo Heights neighborhood where he raised his children and would spend the rest of his life. As his family grew, Don built two additions to the house and a garage with his own two hands and those of his father-in-law, Jose Mario Garza, and friend.
Don was an active member of St. Peter Prince of the Apostles Church and a Third Degree member of the Knights of the Columbus, Alamo Council No. 4298. Don was a warm, generous, and caring soul; he was a happy man that left an indelible impression on all those he met. He liked to garden and to spend time by the pool. He was an accomplished artist and musician who had a love of tennis that he shared with his family and friends.
Husband to Alma for more than fifty years, father to six beautiful children, and grandfather to eight wonderful grandchildren, Don had a gift for giving advice in times of crisis or frustration with a quiet wisdom that always left the listener in a better position to cope with the situation, often with happiness or laughter. Don enjoyed having a full house at any time of year, on any day, and at any time. It is there and, in our hearts, where he will be missed the most.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and LaVonne Small. He is survived by his wife Alma; his daughter Amy Bushman and son-in-law Jason Bushman; his son Michael Small, daughter-in-law Caroline Small, and grandchildren Luke, Amy, and Andrew; his daughter Kristen Foley and son-in-law George Foley, and grandchildren Logan, Parker, and Bruce; his son Matthew Small; his daughter Bethany Small, future son-in-law Sean Medina, and grandchildren Evangeline and Grey; his daughter Jennifer; his brother John of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and nieces Leslie and Shelly.
