Obituary

Daniel H. Muraida, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle died July 21, 2021 at the age of 96. In later years, he valiantly battled stomach cancer, heart disease, the ravages of hip replacements, rotator cuff surgery, and spinal surgery but always thanked God for each new day of life.  He knew his long life was a gift though it meant long years without our Mom.

Dad was born in "Laredito", the oldest section of Westside San Antonio. His family soon after moved to the southwest outskirts of town, where he was raised. He attended Brackenridge High School where he 'ran the mile' for the Eagles, graduating at the age of 16. Without the resources to attend college, Dad went straight to work, in a cabinet shop. A year later he accepted an apprentice draftsman position at Kelly Field. But the WWII draft swept him into the Army Air Force within the year to serve as an aircraft maintenance technician. First stationed in England with the 8th Air Force, he later served with the 9 th Air Force to follow the infantry ashore in Normandy. His service would later take him to France and Germany.  By WWII-end he returned home to Kelly a master draftsman. But the Air Force needed engineers. He was one of two engineer trainee program graduates to pass the state licensure exam as a professional engineer - all without a college degree. That would come years later.

Dad was committed to faith, family and community throughout our lives. He exemplified hard work, dedication and perseverance, not only in personal achievements but in duty to serve others. Precinct judge, first baseman, original DIY man and 'master chef' griller, he was simply a "go to guy."  Nearing retirement, Dad discerned a call to seminary for deeper service.  He served the Archdiocese of San Antonio as a Permanent Deacon at St. Paul's Parish and in the Hospital Chaplaincy program for 24 yrs., until his health no longer permitted. Morningside Ministries is gratefully acknowledged for the excellent care rendered to Dad during his last years.

He is survived by his four children, Daniel J. Muraida (Thelma Inez), Melba M. Pourteau, Gerard Muraida (Jolynn), Richard (Christine), nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and in-laws, Elida Epperson (Lloyd), Benny Ramon (Betty), and Arthur Ramon (Caren).
