On Tuesday, July 7th, 2020, we said good-bye to our beloved Cindy at the young age of 56. Cynthia Ann Carrillo was born in San Antonio, Texas to Carmen and Alfonso De La Rosa. Her parents were delighted for her arrival and her mother lovingly remembers that she was always "such a good baby." She was the middle daughter of 3 girls. "Cindy was always a caring, loving child oftentimes concerned for others around her." Growing up, she played the clarinet and was a member of the color guard for Harlandale High School.
Her sister Valerie describes her as a protector of those who felt defenseless and recalls a time when Cindy came to her aid. "Back then, you didn't speak up if someone was picking on you. And after she heard how a fellow band member was treating me, she got so upset. She went over to him, looked up and brilliantly & quite colorfully told him to leave me alone or else. It was at that moment that I knew my sister loved me."
In 1985, Cindy married her high school sweetheart Leroy. "They liked each other right away", her sister Loretta shared, "we would go shopping with our parents at the local Fed Mart on Military Dr., where Leroy worked after school. My parents would go grocery shopping and Cindy would grab me by the arm and drag me down the aisles to look for Leroy." Two years after marriage they had their first-born, Susan Samantha. "They loved being parents, and they were naturals!" Loretta said. It was not 10 months later that their only son Gregory Lee was born, and they were so happy to have a growing family. Cindy gave birth to their youngest daughter Angelica Lorraine almost 2 years later. Their family was complete.
The Carrillo family recall many happy memories, which included family fishing trips, spending time at their ranch, or traveling out to concerts together. The day they moved into their home on Mission Eagle was a great memory for Leroy and their children. The Carrillo home has always been a place for others to visit. Many a happy gathering was held there for birthdays, holidays, or just to barbeque. Leroy fondly says, "Cynthia was a wonderful cook and always made sure we had plenty for everyone. She welcomed everyone to our home, especially all my family, my friends, and my children's friends." Susan says of her mom, "All my friends and my sibling's friends love my mother and knew our home was a place for them, too."
"Our mother was a very active participant in our education, she would attend all my brother's sporting events, our school functions and she fought hard to make sure we flourished. I remember her bringing everyone to tears when she spoke at my brother's graduation. The faculty and staff at Winston cared about my brother's success so they held a very special place in her heart", her daughter, Angelica recounts.
Cynthia had many hobbies and was very social but also thoroughly enjoyed the peace of her home and a good (hardback) book or a challenging puzzle. "She loved to read and was highly intelligent. She knew a ton of facts. She did not choose to attend college, but had she gone, there is no doubt in my mind she would have thrived. She was always learning!" The family notes that organization was important to her and Leroy both. In their home, there was a place for everything, and everything had its place.
Cindy was an animal lover and her animals were part of her family. She also loved listening to the music of the great singer-songwriters. Her tastes in music ranged from old country music to Frank Sinatra, and Journey. She especially loved Elton John. If Elton was within a 500-mile radius, they were sure to have tickets.
Cynthia was preceded in death by her father Alfonso De La Rosa, who lovingly referred to her as "Wendy", and her nephew Moses Isaac Lujan. She is survived by her husband Leroy Carrillo; children Susan, Gregory and Angelica; her mother Carmen De La Rosa, sisters; Loretta and Valerie De La Rosa; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Rudy Carrillo (Virginia), Archie Carrillo (Jenola), Richard Carrillo (Carmen), JoAnn Dorado (Joe) and Diane Carrillo (Louis); nephew Hilario Lujan; Great niece and nephew Marley & James (her "Rollie-Pollie) Lujan; nieces, Lilliana & Jalena; her dog (Tulie), grand-dogs (Baxter & Trixie), and grand-cat (Daphne). Cynthia will also be lovingly forever remembered by her aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and dear friends.
