Cruz's loyal devotion to his family and friends was the remarkable trait that guided his life. He was a proud Central Catholic High School Button from the day he arrived there to the day of his passing on to the Lord. He attended St. Ann's Catholic Elementary where he first demonstrated his love of sports. He was involved in CYO baseball there under the direction of the young Fr. John Yanta. Upon graduating from Central Catholic in 1966, he attended St. Mary's University and then graduated from Our Lady of the Lake University.
Throughout his school years, Cruz enjoyed learning the soda business at the Alamo Bottling Company, known for its Hippo Size products, and established by his grandfather, Arcadio Garza I and later owned by his father, Arcadio Garza, Jr. Cruz learned the ropes of the meat packing industry at Apache Packing Company, founded by his grandfather, Cruz Lozano. After his graduation from O.L.L.U., Cruz worked for the Bexar County Adult Probation Offices under the state of Texas for nearly thirty years.
Cruz's favorite activities, in addition to sports, included riding his horse, El Tejano, in Fiesta Day Parades and charreadas with the San Antonio Charro Association. Those who knew Cruz best were aware of his skills at the grill. He especially liked to barbecue brisket and he glowed when he saw the perfect, pink smoke ring when he cut into his masterpiece. Cruz's delectible grilled meats and tasty mixed drinks were what his family and friends enjoyed at his annual Christmas Eve parties. He was in his element at any party he hosted or attended. Cruz was also an excellent dancer. He loved festivities and celebrations. His light-hearted spirit was always inspired at the nostalgic sounds of Mariachi music. In Cruz's estimation, Mariachi music could not be topped by any other kind of music. Cruz found excitement watching his favorite college team, the Aggies, play football, basketball and baseball. Being at the Aggies games made his Aggie Dad's heart soar.
Cruz was preceded in death by his parents, Arcadio Jr. and Alicia Lozano Garza and brother, Arcadio Garza III. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sonia Trejo Garza, daughter, Sonia Yvette Garza and siblings, Alicia Garza Casillas and brother, Mario Martin Garza.
