It is with great sadness that the family of Consuelo ("Chelo") Navaira Escalera announces her passing on Monday, September 10, 2018, at the age of 90 years.
Chelo will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her husband Alfred T. Escalera, her sons Jose N. Perez (Elie), Daniel N. Vara, Jr. (Lisa) and Anthony N. Vara (Diana), grandchildren Racheal, Sarah, Jacqueline, Katarina, Joseph, Ryan and Kristin, 8 great-grandchildren, brother Lupe Navaira, and her in-laws Julia Navaira and Henry Castro, Sr.
Consuelo was born and raised in San Antonio and was the youngest daughter of
Jose
and Victoria Navaira. She lived a long and fruitful life, and was known for her optimism, vigilance, perseverance, kindness, and an unyielding commitment to raising her three sons. She loved to dance, laugh, and talk about her family and the many things she enjoyed in life. One of her greatest sources of pride, beyond her family, was the time she spent as a substitute teacher in the Edgewood Independent School District.
