Obituary

Carmen Josephine (Ledesma) Rodriguez, 69, was called to her heavenly home on March 17, 2025, after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer just two and a half months earlier. Born on July 16, 1955, in San Antonio, Texas, she lived a life filled with faith, determination, and true devotion to those she loved. She began her education at St. Peter Claver and St Mary's Parochial School Downtown before attending Providence High School, where she developed the confidence and perseverance that defined her life.

Carmen was a woman of boundless energy and perseverance, always tackling life's challenges head-on. Even as a child, she was adventurous and unafraid. When she was a toddler, she burned her hands on a gas heater, leaving scars she carried throughout her life and lived to tell the story. As she grew, she took on all activities with confidence—swimming, roller skating, riding the family bike, and playing sports. At Providence High School, she demonstrated both athletic ability and leadership, serving as commander of the drill team, a role in which she took great pride. As a teenager, she would also cut lawns. One day, while mowing a neighbor's lawn, she was stung by a wasp and had an anaphylactic reaction. With no car available, her body swelling, and throat closing, she and her mother took a taxi to the hospital. Again, she lived to tell the story. Carmen seemed to face every moment of life with courage and resilience.

At just 19, Carmen married the love of her life, Ray Rodriguez. Their 50-year marriage was a testament to their commitment and love, one that was blessed with two sons, Christian and Andrew. Carmen's love for her family knew no bounds. As a mother, she was a steadfast guide, ensuring homework was done, dinner was made, and practices were attended—all while excelling in her career. She was always present in her children's lives, never missing a game or practice. She volunteered at her son's school events at St. Margaret Mary and Central Catholic, always willing to lend a hand to make every event special. She helped restart the cherished Mother-Son Luncheon at Central Catholic, a tradition that continues to bring families together. Carmen was not only involved in her children's activities but also worked side by side with Ray as a volunteer at the St. Mary's University Fiesta Oyster Bake. When Ray joined the organizing committee, she took on the challenge of chairing a beer booth, which she ran for many years. Her booth became widely recognized as one of the best-run and most efficient at the Bake.

As her children grew older, Carmen remained their biggest supporter, always cheering them on in their endeavors. She proudly attended Andrew's multiple military graduations, including his Airborne and Ranger ceremonies. When Christian embarked on a month-long hike on the Long Trail in Vermont, she frequently texted him to check in on his progress and offer encouragement. She never questioned the bold or unconventional paths her sons chose—at least, she never let them know if she did. Whether it was jumping out of airplanes, being the "demolition guy" in the platoon, backpacking in the desert for a week at a time doing wilderness therapy, or climbing trees, she encouraged them wholeheartedly. She always told her boys they could accomplish anything they set their minds to—and she made sure they truly believed it.

Carmen dedicated 36 years of her life to Southwestern Bell, which later became AT&T, where she became known as the heart of every department she worked in. Her colleagues often mistook her for a manager due to her leadership, dedication, and ability to manage a lot of moving parts. Former coworkers fondly recall how she made the workplace feel like family, offering encouragement, prayers, and wisdom whenever it was needed. "Carmen was more than a coworker; she was a mentor and a friend who always knew the right words to lift our spirits." She ran 100 miles an hour every day. Every manager and coworker always knew where to go when they needed information and when things needed to get done.

She later brought that same passion to Fulton Property Group, where she not only kept the office running but also served as a mentor, prayer warrior, and friend to many. "Her presence made every challenge easier because we knew she had our backs. She could anticipate and solve any problem that threatened to arise, and she never once neglected to help someone in need. She had the kind of patience that made every challenge seem more manageable and the grace to handle each situation with a calm presence that constantly inspired me. Carmen's legacy is one of strong faith, loyalty, love for her friends and family, kindness, strength, and a steadfast commitment to both her work and the people she cared about. We are all better because we knew her."

Her deep and unwavering faith was the foundation of her life. As a devoted member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, she found both peace and inspiration within her parish community. Known for her kindness and compassion, she was always ready to offer a helping hand or a comforting prayer. She actively participated in ACTS retreats and served as a Eucharistic Minister, enriching the spiritual lives of those around her.

After the heartbreaking loss of her son Andrew in 2015, Carmen found solace and strength in her faith and community. She became deeply involved in Wear Blue: Run to Remember, finding purpose in supporting others through their grief while continuing to honor Andrew's memory. "Carmen had a way of turning pain into purpose. She made sure no one ever felt alone in their grief, and she helped so many of us find healing."

In the past decade, much of Carmen's greatest joy came from spending time with her grandchildren. She was a constant presence at soccer games, gymnastics practices, and school events, cheering on Joaquin and Annabelle with unparalleled pride. She loved taking them shopping for clothes, calling in the evenings to hear about their day, and making special trips to the zoo. When they were younger, she delighted in taking
them to Costco, where they would laugh as she pushed them "fast" in the shopping cart before playfully chasing them down. And whenever they were sick, they always knew Grandma would be there, ready to bring Las Palapas chicken soup to help them feel better.

Carmen was preceded in death by her beloved son Andrew and her parents, Abel and Olga Ledesma. She is survived by her husband Ray, son Christian, daughter-in-law Kim, and her cherished grandchildren, Joaquin and Annabelle. She is also survived by her siblings Mary Botello, Martha Hernandez, and Edward Ledesma.
