Obituary

Carmen Alfonso (Al) Hernandez Jr, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on October 13, 2023 at the age of 81 years old.   He graduated from Edgewood High School in 1960, then proudly served in the US Army from 1960-1963 when he served a one year tour in Korea. He worked for two years for the City of San Antonio, then worked as a federal civil service employee at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas from January 1966 until his retirement in September 2000 as Military Personnel Management Specialist, where he received several Performance Awards including the prestigious AFMPC Dan Berkant Award for outstanding contributions as a MP specialist recognizing exceptional individuals in their daily performance of duties.  He continued his education and earned his Associates degree in Applied Science from San Antonio College in 1971.

He was married for 57 years to the love of his life, Cecilia and together, raised three sons: Eddie and twins Mike and Mark. He attended St. Thomas More Catholic Church, and donated much of his time there as CYO coach for various baseball, basketball, track and flag football teams, and helped develop the church athletic fields and stands. He built a miniature basketball court in his backyard for his children and grandchildren. He was an avid fisherman, taking countless trips to local lakes, and especially to the Gulf Coast with his immediate and extended family members. He was also a diehard fan of the San Antonio Spurs, Dallas Cowboys and Houston Astros.  We loved to hear him tell stories about his growing up on the west side of San Antonio. His legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of all who were fortunate to know him.

He is survived by his wife, Cecilia, sons Eddie (wife Cyndi), Mike and Mark; his siblings Maria Luisa Guajardo, Jimmy Hernandez and Rosa Arredondo, and 7 grandchildren, Adam, Trevor, Aaron, Treston, Kristian, Arianna and Nikolas and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Hernandez and brothers Joseph and Arturo.
