Carlos Roberto Nuñez, age 72, passed away on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on July 13, 1949 in San Antonio to Ruben and Constancia (Lopez) Nuñez.
He is survived by his loving wife, Martha Nuñez, his daughter Vanessa Marie Nunez Stoner (Tom) and son Matthew James Rodriguez, his grandchildren Casey and Caden Stoner and Luke Rodriguez, his siblings: Diana Nuñez Beijbom (Lars), Susie McSwain (Richard), Magda Nuñez, Greta Huddleston, Joseph Nuñez, Terri McAngus (Lee), Angela McMahon and Pete Mazuca, Michael Mazuca and Mary Mazuca, step mother Josie Nuñez, his aunt Beatrice Vinas, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and godchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruben Revilla Nuñez and Constancia Lopez, and brother David Nuñez.
Carlos was an amazing man. He had a love for life, always smiling, full of joy, kind, positive, generous, never met a stranger and was always ready to make you laugh.
He attended Central Catholic High School, class of '67, where he played on Central's basketball team and won four consecutive state championships, coached by Joe Cortez. He attended Trinidad State Junior College in Colorado on a basketball scholarship. He received his undergraduate degree from St. Mary's University and finished his education at UT Health Science Center Dental School.
He began a successful dental practice lasting 44 years. He was loved and respected by his staff, patients, and the medical community. His staff would say he treated them like family and made work fun. His patients would say they loved hearing his stories and he would make them laugh. Caring for his patients truly brought him joy.
Carlos was an avid golfer and a member of MIGA (Mexican International Golf Association) where he became President for six years. He served on the University Hospital District Board for three years. Other things he enjoyed over the years were Spurs games, cycling, music and dancing, traveling, hunting, and fishing with his dad.
In 2003, Carlos had a life changing experience at an A.C.T.S. retreat where he gave his life completely to the Lord Jesus. His faith became extremely important to him and he would say "We are here to serve, not be served." Serving he did. Carlos was a devoted member of St Matthew Catholic Church where he participated in several bible studies and led a men's Saturday morning group. He also was a lector, a Eucharistic minister, served with the jail ministry, fed the homeless, prayed the rosary at abortion clinics (to end abortions) and continued to serve as team member for A.C.T.S. retreats. He truly loved studying the Word of God and sharing his faith with others. Carlos served on the Pilgrim Center of Hope board for the Stella Maris Campaign from 2019-present. Carlos was a member of the Knights of Columbus, court number 10240, and became a fourth-degree knight through St. Luke's Catholic Church.
Carlos' greatest treasures were his family, friends and brothers in Christ. In his later years he truly cherished being with family and growing in his relationship with God.
Carlos was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on June 14, 2020. He was a warrior battling this disease for 16 months, and he trusted the Lord every step of the way. His strong faith allowed him to carry this cross with such dignity and grace.
