Charlie was a respectful, honest, loving father and grandfather, he will be missed dearly. May you rest in peace dad you will always remain in our hearts.
Charlie was a pioneer in many social change initiatives. His public and civil work expands over 65 years. Beginning in the 1960's working to allow young aspiring boxers to compete in local amateur boxing tournaments. At that time these youth were known as the "Pee-Wee's" and later recognized as the "Juniors". Charlie himself was an amateur boxer, winning 3 local Golden Glove tournaments for his weight division. He later became a professional boxer and ended his career with an impressive 17-4 record. He fought through-out Texas, in Mexico, and in Las Vegas. Charlie has been recognized as a Golden Gloves Hall of Fame coach and as a Universal Coach.
After his boxing career, Charlie started his social services life. In the 1980s, Charlie worked tirelessly to help address the Hunger issue that was prevalent in Bexar County and South Texas. He was instrumental in bringing the governmental cheese surplus to Bexar County and surrounding communities. He has also advocated for hundreds of thousands of Bexar County families helping them secure much-needed public benefits. Charlie Mata is also the founder of the Advocates Social Services, the Prospect Hill Neighborhood Association, and the Advocates Boxing Youth Program. The three organizations still function and serve till this day.
Through his life work he laid the foundation and a legacy of helping others that follows his favorite scripture, Galatians 6:2,
"We must Carry each Other's burden in order to fulfill God's Law"
He was a God loving and God-fearing man who had a desirable urge to help others and to give all of himself to ensure that those who were in need got the help they needed. A humble honest social worker a "Champion in Life".
We know that through his faith in God by the grace of God his soul will rest in peace and that his journey to the maker will be as kind and gentle as Charlie was a person.
He lives to cherish his memory to all his family and friends and the community he so lovable helped. Good bye Charlie from everyone who loves you.
