After his wife Maria, daughter Candie and grandson Tony had prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet at his bedside, Candelario V. Rendon died peacefully at home on Sunday, May 15, 2022.
Candelario, "Cande" and "Tio Lalo," was born on February 2, 1927 in San Antonio, Texas to Fidencio and Maria Venegas Rendon. He served in the United States Army of the Air Force. He and Maria del Carmen de Leon married on September 7, 1947 and raised three daughters. In 2021, Candelario and Maria celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary. He was self-employed in the 1950's delivering kerosene to households for heating and cooking, and worked several different jobs throughout his lifetime to provide for his family. He last worked as an Usher at the Alamodome. He also coached his daughters' CYO Girls' softball team when they were young.
Candelario was an active parishioner of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church and of Mission Concepcion where he served as Eucharistic Minister and helped in many ways, including cleaning the Mission weekly for several years. He was active with the Legion of Mary, taking the Holy Eucharist to homebound persons, taking the church census, assisting young couples in getting their babies baptized, and adults in receiving the Catholic sacraments. Candelario was a member of the St. Cecilia's Knights of Columbus and ACTS and of the Charismatic Sala Alta Prayer Group. He led rosaries for grieving families at funerals and helped with fundraising activities at Residencia Via Maria. He and his wife were elected King and Queen of the City of San Antonio District 5 Senior Center two consecutive years where they daily engaged in activities with other seniors.
Candelario took every opportunity to share his faith with others everywhere he went. He would take the family to pray the rosary at KCOR Radio Station when the rosary was aired over the radio back in the 1960's. He greeted everyone he met and always ended his conversations with "God bless you." He was known at Mission Concepcion for his practice of greeting and shaking hands with each and every person as he worked his way to "his" pew up front for Mass. Tourists who wrote to the Mission after their visit always singled him and Maria out as "that little couple who greeted us so warmly and made us feel so welcomed." He attended daily Mass at St. Cecilia's chapel until the Covid-19 pandemic caused doors to be closed and forced him to stay home.
Education was something Candelario valued, ensuring that his three daughters received a Catholic education, as well as his grandchildren. He wanted to give them the best advantage possible in life. He also placed emphasis on his duty to vote and made sure that he voted in every election; he last voted in the May 7, 2022 Bexar County Amendment and Bond election. His passion was singing Mexican songs, dancing cumbias and polkas and telling jokes. He enjoyed occasional trips to the casino.
Candelario was preceded in death by his parents, Fidencio and Maria Venegas Rendon, his sisters Guadalupe Rendon Rendon, Teresa Cape, his brother Jose V. Rendon and granddaughter Suzy Blanton. Surviving family are his loving wife, Maria del Carmen Rendon, his daughters Carmen (Rick) Hoff, Cecilia (Roy) Gabrillo and Candie ( + Augustin) Beltran; grandchildren, Tony Mayoral, Lizan (Bob) Gilbert, Anne Mayoral, Julia Tucker (Justin), and Sarah (Mark) Cebrian; 12 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson. He has many caring surviving cousins, nieces and nephews from the extended Rendon family. Candelario will be dearly missed by his family and friends from the faith communities at Mission Concepcion, St. Cecilia's Church and Sala Alta.
