Bruce Russell Cuthbertson passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2026, after a long illness. He was 57 years old.
Bruce was born May 10, 1968, to parents Roy Gene Cuthbertson and Genevieve Fox Cuthbertson. His education included years at St. Martin Hall, Saint Anthony Seminary, and Central Catholic High School. He graduated from Vestavia Hills High School in Birmingham in 1986. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in German and Government from the University of Texas at Austin in 1999.
Other than a two year sojourn in Alabama, Bruce was a lifelong Texan, residing in both San Antonio and Austin, and he was proud that his Texas roots extended back to the 19th Century McMullen-McGloin Colony of Irish settlers. He worked a variety of jobs after high school and while getting his degree, including a stint of several years with Albertson's grocery stores. He began and settled into a career at USAA in 2002, where he worked with distinction as an agent licensed to sell Flood insurance in several states.
Bruce spent his early years putting up with three older siblings, and was fiercely intelligent and precocious, absorbing knowledge like a sponge, and teaching himself to play guitar and piano. He grew tall and broad, sparking the interest of football coaches in two states, but was a gentle giant of a man, and frankly kind of a nerd, interested more in music, good movies, and computers than sports. As an adult he was an intelligent, complicated, stubborn man, and intensely private. Like most people, he had his strengths and his faults, but qualities that engendered in his wife a love that we should all be so lucky to have.
Bruce is survived by his wife of 16 years, Lisa Lynch, siblings Jane Cuthbertson, Andy Cuthbertson, Robert Cuthbertson (Jill McClure); nephew Bowen Cuthbertson, niece Maggie Cuthbertson, and numerous cousins.
