Bertha entered her eternal rest in the Lord's arms on Sunday, March 15, 2020. She was preceded in death by her parents: Abel Gonzalez and Maria Hildelisa Arechiga Gonzalez, her sister Eva Gonzalez, maternal grandparents, Simon and Clotilde Arechiga; and paternal grandparents, Dr. Manuel Gonzalez and Manuelita Aguirre de Gonzalez. Bertha was born in Laredo, Texas, but spent the majority of her life in San Antonio, Texas.
She was always grateful for her Catholic education beginning in her elementary school until completing her college degree. She was a graduate of Providence High School, Class of 1953, and received Bachelor of Arts degree from Incarnate Word College. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court St. Anthony #214 during the 1970's and 1980's. She was also a member of the Altar Society of St. Mary Church.
In later years, she became a parishioner of Our Lady of Sorrows Church where she supported fundraisers held by the Altar Society of that church. She was also privileged to have seen two living Saints. She joined other San Antonians who gathered on San Antonio streets to watch Pope St. John Paul II as he traveled between the different sites he visited. She saw St. Mother Theresa of Calcutta when she came to San Antonio and gave a talk to local Catholic groups on May 13, 1976.
She enjoyed seeing the variety of performances held at the Majestic Theater after dining at the St. Anthony or Guenther Hotels. She had an excellent voice which she shared with family and friends during private recitals in her home. She enjoyed reading and discussing current events. She looked forward to receiving her Today's Catholic and reading every single article.
Her last years of her life at St. Francis Nursing Home were a dream come true. She was delighted to have the opportunity to attend Mass and pray the rosary daily as well as other scheduled activities. Special thanks are given to the Seraphic Sisters and the staff at St. Francis Nursing Home.
