Beatriz Portillo Madrid went peacefully to be with our Lord on January 21, 2026, at the remarkable age of 100.
Born in El Paso, Texas, to Guadalupe Loya and Jesus Portillo, Bea was the youngest of six children and was lovingly spoiled by her family. From an early age, she showed the strong work ethic that would define her life. When she told her father she wanted to quit school, he sent her to work in the family grocery store as punishment—but Bea, true to form, loved it.
Proud of her Mexican heritage, Bea carried her culture, traditions, and values with joy throughout her life. She was smart, spunky, and full of spirit. She loved to read, dance, laugh, and, above all, care for the people around her. Never one to stay quiet about matters she cared deeply about, Bea kept up with politics and was never shy about sharing her opinions.
While on vacation in California, she met the love of her life, Raul Madrid. Bea cherished traveling with Raul during his years selling Mexican food machinery, creating memories that spanned decades and miles. They shared 62 wonderful years of marriage and built a beautiful life together, raising five children. She often said her children were the greatest joy of her life.
Her deep Catholic faith, inspired by her mother's devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe, sustained her throughout her life and became a cornerstone of the family. Her home was always open—filled with the sounds of children playing, her novelas on the television, and the aroma of beans simmering on the stove. She taught her family by example: work hard, keep the faith, travel when you can, and always make room at the table.
Bea was immensely proud of each of her children. She enthusiastically supported her son Chris in building his burger restaurant, where she eagerly helped wherever needed. She later provided the same steadfast support to her daughter Diana in her own restaurant venture.
She was preceded in death by her husband Raul and her son Chris. She is survived by her children Dolores, Carlos, Diana, and Terry, along with her eight grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought her endless joy.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to VITAS Healthcare and her devoted caregivers Teresa, Kika, and Karina for their compassionate care.
