Her passion for education encouraged her children and grandchildren to earn college degrees. In 1931, she and her family moved to San Antonio and became woven into the fabric of the West Side. Her love of family was based on the foundation provided by her mother, grandmother and extended family.
Asencion met her future husband Jesus Esquivel during a dance at Woodlawn Lake's Civic Center. In 1942, the two eloped and would enjoy 72 years of marriage together until her husband's death in 2015.
She went to Moore Hill Elementary, J.T. Brackenridge, and attended Lanier High School. Asencion played the bass drum in the San Antonio Girls' Club band. After traveling as a migrant farm worker in Michigan, Ascension left Lanier and joined the National Youth Administration. She held many jobs to support her mother and grandmother such as a bus girl at the Plaza Hotel and salesperson at Joske's. When her children began school, Ascension earned her GED and began her career at Kelly Air Force Base in 1962. As a supply clerk, she ordered KAFB's first computer and top secret items until her retirement when the base closed in 2001.
