Our beloved father, Antonio P. Garza, Jr, passed away peacefully amongst family on September 6, 2024. He is survived by his spouse Carolina Garza, and his two children, Tony III (Valentina) and Maria, and his brothers Emilio and Daniel (Maria Guadalupe) Garza. He is also survived by his brother-in-laws Ramon (Irma) and Robert (Lourdes), and sister-in-laws Elvira (Joe) and Carmen. He is also survived by his three grandchildren, Enrique, Isabella, and Carlos. He was preceded in death by his father, Antonio P. Garza, Sr and mother, Dionisia M. Garza.
Tony grew up in the Christ the King neighborhood area. Having lost his dad at an early age, he was fortunate to have a strong mother and a wonderful community that helped to raise him and his brothers and put them all on a good path.
A 1962 graduate of Holy Cross, Tony believed in the power of education, and earned his BS from St Edwards University, an MS from Boston College, and an MSA from the University of Notre Dame. He found his calling in teaching high school mathematics at an early age and taught generations of students over a 48-year career at Boston Technical HS, Holy Cross HS and Thomas Edison HS. He also taught 13 summers at the Dr. Manuel P. Berriozábal Pre-freshman Engineering Program (PREP) whose mission is to prepare middle and high school students for advanced studies and careers in STEM fields.
He met the love of his life, Carolina, who was from the same neighborhood, in 1968. They married in 1973 and celebrated 50 years of marriage last year. He was fiercely proud of her and her accomplishments as well as those of his kids, grandkids, friends, and the many accomplishments of all his students.
He will be sorely missed, but his memory and legacy as an educator, husband, father, grandfather, and friend will live on in our hearts.
