Angela Theresa Gokelman passed away peacefully on July 18, 2026, at the age of 88, surrounded by family. She was a greatly loved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and teacher who will be remembered for her graciousness, kindness, and love of family, friends, and students.
Angela was born in New York City on August 13, 1937. She graduated from St. Joseph's College with a degree in Education, specializing in French and Spanish, and from Oblate School of Theology with a Masters in Pastoral Ministry. In 1961, Angela married Second Lieutenant John J. Gokelman, an officer in the United States Air Force. This began a 24-year career as an Air Force wife beginning in Great Falls, Montana, and ending in San Antonio, Texas. During this time, she raised four children and still found time to serve as an active church volunteer.
In 1980 she began a 27-year career as a teacher at Providence Catholic High School, retiring in 2007. For many years she was head of the religion department and directed many school activities and retreats. She developed a course on Death and Dying that is still being used today. During her tenure at Providence, Angela influenced hundreds of young women and was greatly loved. It was a common occurrence to run into her former students throughout San Antonio and beyond. In 2004, she was honored by the Archdiocese of San Antonio as an outstanding leader in Catholic education.
Upon her retirement, supporting her family became her main priority. She attended all her children's and grandchildren's activities including concerts, recitals, and sporting events. Angela also developed a serious passion for the San Antonio Spurs. She was one of their most ardent fans, always willing to talk about them, and often having strong opinions about the team and the coaches. For years she and John would purchase a ten-pack of Spurs season tickets. Going to these games was always a great source of enjoyment for her.
During her last two years, Angela suffered from Lewey Body dementia and resided in Angelique House at The Village at Incarnate Word. While the disease progressed, her thoughts constantly returned to her time at Providence, especially her students and fellow teachers. She never lost her love for Providence and cherished her time there. Angela was quick to laugh and was always warm and gracious. We will miss her.
Angela is survived by her husband of 65 years, John, her four children William (Lena), Anne (Todd), Lynn (Frank), and John, her seven grandchildren Katherine (Ben), Kevin, Nicholas (Grace), Julia (Jacob), Stephen, Christopher, and Sarah, and her three great grandchildren John, Mary, and Joseph.
