Obituary

Alois John O'Berg (Al) died peacefully on June 10, 2023. He was born on July 29, 1936 to Harold and Agnes O'Berg of San Antonio, Texas. In 1957, he married Lillian Kollodziej, the love of his life. On June 1, 2023, they celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary.

Al attended St. Gerard High School while he also served in the Naval Reserve. After graduation in 1954, he served in the United States Navy. Following that, he worked at his family's business, The O'Berg Garage. With a life-long love of learning, he studied automotives, insurance and law. He used this unique combination of knowledge in his successful career at Allstate and USAA insurance companies. In 1992, he retired from USAA after 20+ years of service.

A deeply religious man, he was committed to serving others. Al was a founding member of St. Benedict's parish 1957-1973 where he served as lector, high school religious educator, Boy Scout leader and treasurer of St. Vincent de Paul Society for seven years. Al helped Fr. Gil Enderle start the Our Lady of Perpetual Help chapter of St. Vincent de Paul on Grimes St. (San Antonio)

Later, as a parishioner at St. Matthew's Catholic Church (1973-2023), he was a member of the Holy Name Society Men's Club, a 4th degree Knight of Columbus, and St. Vincent De Paul Society Food Pantry volunteer.

Always devoted to his marriage, Al and Lillian were members of Holy Family Guild, the Double Ring Society, the Father Leopold Moczygemba Foundation, and the Order of Alhambra.

Al was proceeded in death by his parents; brother, Harold Jr.; sisters, Marion Schultz and Barbara Traugott; and daughter Mary. He is survived by his loving bride, Lillian, his children Yvette Gondeck (Wayne), Jeffrey O'Berg (Lazette), Leslie Haight (Cameron) and Suzanne Alex (Steven), nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
