On March 17, 2024, Alfredo "Freddy" Guerrero, age 86, died in his home where he had been cared for by his family as Parkinson's and Dementia ravaged his mind and body. A hard-working and caring provider, Freddy will be missed by those he loved and who loved him.
One of ten siblings, Freddy was born in 1937 in Crystal City, Texas. He spent most of his formative years in Luling, Texas, where he met his future wife Mary Jane Ayala. From an early age, Freddy worked tirelessly as a ranch hand. He especially enjoyed raising and showing animals, which lead to him winning many 4-H competitions. Some of his last fond childhood memories were of the champion animals he had raised and showed.
During the summer before his senior year of high school, Freddy and two friends traveled to Seguin, Texas, to enlist in the military. Freddy was the only one of the three who passed the qualifying exam. Before his parents even knew he had applied, Freddy enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was stationed around the world, including in Okinawa, Japan, and the Marshall Islands. While in the Air Force, Freddy earned his high school equivalency certificate among many other life and educational lessons that would serve him well. On January 25, 1960, Freddy was honorably discharged after almost four years' service. He returned briefly to Luling, Texas, before accepting a one-year position with a defense contractor to work on the US military base in Kwajalein Atoll, part of the Marshall Islands.
When he returned to Texas, he courted and soon thereafter married Mary Jane Ayala on November 22, 1962. They began their careers, family, and 62-year marriage in San Antonio, Texas. Freddy began what would be a more than three-decade career working as a civil servant for the United States Army at various military bases in San Antonio. While working a full-time job and raising four children, Freddy also earned an Associate in Science Degree from St. Philip's College on December 21, 1974 and an Associate of Applied Science Degree from San Antonio College on May 16, 1975. Throughout his civil service career, Freddy received numerous commendations and promotions. When he retired as a GS-15, he was managing a team that traveled to US military hospitals to enhance efficiency, minimize waste, and recover precious metals. His dedication and diligence set an inspiring example of what it means to be a hard-working professional.
Despite being dedicated to his career, Freddy found time to support his children's educational and athletic activities. He dropped them off and picked them up from practice and paced the sideline during every game. He was also a handyman's handyman. To his children, "dad" meant carpenter, mechanic, electrician, plumber, landscaper, and griller. He showed his children love through his actions more than his words. Few things brought him more joy than tuning up his family members' vehicles, specially making sure the oil was changed on a regular basis. His children knew if they called him, he would come and help in any way he could.
Freddy enjoyed fishing, gardening, and watching sports. He liked cheering on the Spurs and rooting against the Dallas "Cowgirls." Later in life, he especially loved spending time with his adopted grandson, John, and his three grandchildren: Ella, Noah, and Aidan. If it would have been up to him, he would have died while fishing on a lake in a boat with his grandchildren.
In fact, he died with his loving wife by his side. As she had promised him on their wedding day, Mary Jane remained dedicated to Freddy, to love and cherish, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, till death do us part.
Freddy is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Ayala; his daughter, Rachele Guerrero and her partner, Celinda Barron, and their children, Ella and Noah; his eldest son, Rolando Guerrero and his son, Aidan Torres; his second eldest son, Rene Guerrero, and his youngest son, Raphael Guerrero and his partner, Samantha Oglesby; his sisters, Pauline Espinoza, Alice Sanchez, and Mary Ann Guerrero; his sister-in-law, Mary Louise Ramos; and his brothers-in-law, Bernardo Ramos, Hector Ayala, and Alec Luckenbach. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfredo and Maria Lopez Guerrero; his brothers, Gilbert, Tony, Oscar, Oswaldo, Edward, and Arnold; his sister-in-law, Irene Ayala; his daughter-in-law, Patricia Torres; and his adopted grandson, John Manuel Garcia.
